Hey, I have not been on the forum for quite some time, and when I was it was briefly over on the Termites and Bowties thread. I'm in the process of rebuilding a 28 Chevy truck. I spend a fair amount of time here (not logged in) reviewing the lengthy engine build thread where guys talk about building up the Chevy 4 banger high performance. Gives me some good ideas on what to use for parts on my engine. Anyhow got a call from the machine shop today letting me know both the 28 heads I took them have cracks in. Wasn't sure where to post a wanted add in the classifieds so I thought I would put it here and I thought to reintroduce myself would be good also. So, if anyone has a head around that they know is good and they didn't use because they went to the Oldsmobile 3-port, or had more than one or whatever, please let me know. Or maybe you have some other thoughts, ideas for me on what to do. As the engine sits right now it is bored out 60 over. We had to sleeve one of the cylinders. Looking at maybe doing something different than a stock carb and exhaust. Don't have a ton of money to throw at it, but want to 'hop' it up a little maybe. Thanks! David in WI
Look into a company called Lock and Stitch...They maybe able to save your head....They did wonders on my early hemi block...
Shit ,I was looking at one at a swap meet here ,was entertaining it to put on my T engine ,but I am in Canada, might be able to source the guy out and get a number for him if your really stuck
Hey WR if it were one that the guy said tested ok I would be interested, but if not I wouldn't want you to jump through hoops. And RV at about 3hrs from me your just about close enough to drive and check it out. I'll see how many other replies I get. Hoping to find one that is for sure good. I have 3 now that need repair.
I will start to see if I can get a name ,I had his number from another purchase I made from him in the summer but not sure what I did with it
I need to go pick the heads up yet. I know one had cracks going off the valve seats that were visible after a cleaning with wire wheel. The other had a crack visible going off one of the holes in the water jacket. I'm not sure where other holes reared their ugly heads once it was magged. I emailed Crow Cast. I'll see if they get back to me to discuss. By the looks of their page they only fix external cracks so hopefully none are within the head. I have read on the VCCA forum of heads they actually cut open, fixed internal cracks, and welded it back together. Does not sound like a cheap repair.
Believe it or not I had someone reach out to me that has a NOS 28 cylinder head for a price that I can't refuse, so it's looking like I have that covered.
