Hot Rods How many guys drive street brawlers?

    I have always sort of followed the performance vein. I know a lot of guys on here enjoy just cruising around, which I totally get and that is ok.

    I grew up in the 70's-80's when there was quite a bit of weekend street racing. My dad was a drag racer and although never promoted street racing, he always helped me get the tune right for Saturday night. He knew what us squirrels were up to....

    How many of you build something with the intent of thrashing on it, maybe a little stoplight action etc? If so, tell us about it. We are always faster in our minds.
     
  2. Root. You know my Model A. Yea I play on the street and have put some OT new performance machines to waste stoplight to stop light. They get taught a lesson..... Love those moments, especially when I am just out to do a test hit.:)

    I personally don't think I've ever built a hotrod for the street that wasn't fairly high performance. And sometimes they were more strip cars that were street legal, than true street cars. I don't street race anymore, but did a fair bit of it when I was younger. I still don't want a street rod that can't intimidate other people if I want to.

    Mine looks like street rod but will surprise many people.
    Yes I run it every once in a while. Not just a cruiser.
     
  10. I want to build another fun street car. I grew up doing quite a bit of street racing as well and had something fun until about 5 or 6 years ago when I sold my 11- second Chevelle. I am pretty sure I will end up with a 671 blown and injected SBC soon so will be needing to build a car to put it in. :D

  14. In my house even the wife's late model pickup is tweeked.

    I am still of a mind that 400 (+/-) is just a healthy street motor. Race motors go up from there.

    Everything I've built was a brawler. Current OT build will be a cruiser - 500 or so at the crank with that OT chevy engine

    I remember as a kid we use to drive some pretty sketchy races on the street. .... In the mid '70's.
    Todays racers drive some serious shit street legal ... Tom Baily, Alex Taylor, Racer-X .... I think a squirrel could beat them all .... Just saying street racing is so far down the ladder, not worth it for a true racer.

    There was a time when I street raced almost every weekend... Those days are long gone , I have way too much to loose. But every car I build for myself better have excess horsepower , usually 3 pedals and a positraction is a must. Its called stress relief. When I leave work after a long day and roll onto the freeway on ramp with two black stripes behind me it's a good day.
     
  26. I have never been into the street racing deal, I am tried of street cars it's pure racecar at this point in my life.

    My 427 equipped car is a Low Rider. So, it`s low and slow as I go.

  28. I learned from one of the best. Don't make it look like a Hot Rod and just surprise them all. I love leading the pack. Can't remember owning anything that stayed stock, even our Family cars. In 1976 My wife loved her unassuming tired White paint on our 57 Ranch Wagon. 2 Kids in the back seat a built 2-4's 427 side oiler and a column shift wide ratio 3 speed. That motor came out of my 55 F-100 after I rear ended some clown with no brake lights. One of the best shop trucks I had back then. There also was a 53 F-100 Panel Truck that was Sectioned and Channeled on a highly modified chassis that ran a 4 bolt main 351-C. Nasty Fun S.O.B. I'm still at it. Currently derailed with a new to me 40 Ford Coupe that will run a 392 of mixed background. My unfinished 53 F-100 is Hemi 4 speed powered again. My unfinished 57 2D Ht is nasty FE Tripower full roller top end 4 speed. Oh, and that silly little Avitar mild Custom still shocks the hell out of people that thing Customs are just for looks.
    Not Even! At 76 years Young I still love hitting the Right Pedal!

It was a 427, and now a 327 with 2.02 heads, L79 cam, c4b, Holley carb, 4 speed. I am now doing a 383 for it, and after buying a sensible grind for, changed my mind and bought a solid lifter Crower cam , with even more duration because, I can't help it. She may not have been the fastest thing in 1968, nor is she now, but I run her hard every chance I get. Next step, hubcaps, and dual quads. Who expects a 59 to be Quick. Hard to build a sleeper anymore, but....
