Hot Rods Split bones or hairpins what axle

Putting together an A frame and wanted to split the wishbone or run hairpins was going to use a 37 axle but it has been suggested the hairpins or wishbone may interfere with turn radius.

 

A model A axle or 32-36 axle would be the best choice.

 

I used a '35-'36 axle on the front of my A with split wishbones with no interference. I did mount the back of them to the inboard side of the frame rails to reduce binding and twisting a bit which also added a small amount of extra clearance to the tires in sharp turns.

Thought 37 was a tube axle

 

Still the same dimensions 37 -40 ? But your right 37 is a tube axle

 

The tube axle was only used on the V8-60 in 1937

 

Im runnin 39 axle with split bones but I am spring in front...not sure thats of much help

 

Yeah, you will want something with more distance between the spring perches and the king pins.

With either hairpins, or split bones, that axle will lead to steering issues, even if you put the mounts inboard on the frame.

Here is a dropped A axle, split '37-'40 bones pretty tight at full lock.

Looks like A bones in your picture which can make a difference.

 

To start with, if you use the 37 axle with a spring over configuration, you will need a longer spring as the perches are 38 1/2" and not 36 1/2" like 28-36 perches. The advantage to this is a better ride from the longer spring. Posie's sells a longer spring for this application.
Using a Model A wishbone with is the shortest wishbone will help with keeping the wheel from hitting in tight turns. The 37 axle is 48" while the 32-36 is 50"s. If you drop the 37 axle, you need to strech it to maintain the 48" lenght. A combination of smaller wheels, tires, back spacing and types of brakes should easily make up for the 1" difference per side.
