Found some material that we may cover a package tray with to see how it looks. It’s not as cool as actual tuck and roll, but an 18 year olds budget can only afford so much too. It can at minimum be temporary until he decides what to do with the seats and can afford it. Anyway, Silas just needs to decide between white or pink. I voted white, but it also isn’t my car...

I used that for the firewall in my Olds. I wanted to get actual sewn pleats but I also needed to keep the project moving. This stuff was cheap, was easy to work with, and so far has worked well and looks good. The nice thing about white vinyl is that it cleans up well with soft scrub and magic eraser. This is 1/4" plywood I polyurethaned and then stapled the heck out of.

I've had similar press-pleats in my 57 Ford for over 20 years, and they still look pretty good as well.

Could this material be quickly p***ed thru a sewing machine to add some "ersatz" s***ching for a little extra detailing? Or would it be cost prohibitive?

Thanks for the info! That is good to know! I think we will likely get some and try it.

    Firewall looks good too!

I'm sure it could be. You wouldn't want to try to mimic the s***ch on the pleat because the press pleat is wider than the s***ch, so it would just look like a pressed pleat with a useless s***ch running through it, that probably isn't as straight as the pressed pleat. But if you wanted to add some detailing to the material, it wasn't overly thick, and it would seem totally feasible.

I have a hard enough time keeping my white painted firewall presentable!

I think that's a cool idea for a temporary fix. I also have always preferred white interior.

Yup I loved me some white interiors but the pink package tray might be fun.

So...measured the width of the package tray this morning before I headed to work and seems it is quite a bit wider that the width of this pleated material. So...starting to think about a two-tone white and pink package tray with some stainless trim to go between transitions? Or, could just do one color but maybe we order a little of both to play with. :p

You could do that with all white, too. Nothing wrong about breaking up the same colored upholstery with trim.

Personally, the problem I see with going with the pink upholstery is that if it isn't the exact color as the paint, it isn't going to match. The white is a neutral color, and doesn't clash with the pink on the body. But IMHO two different pink tones can clash. The pink gut would be cool with a white exterior color scheme though.

I agree 100% and if it were mine, it would be all white most likely. Since the pink on the car is really more of a pinkish beige, matching it would be nearly impossible with the interior. However, I also have to keep in mind that this is Silas's car and he has a vision that he wants to see with it. So, no more than the material costs, I figure he can play around some with it. :D

I ran into this same issue when I bought similar material for my interior. The main difference was that mine has sewn pleats so it was easier to hide where I added two pleats on either end of the package tray. 20220211_162844.jpg

I guess it comes down to what Silas wants.

To me package trays get dirty fast. We used to get some burlap-like material and call it done. I still have to do the one in my car. I have the backer material and that's that.

IMG_20220508_111721248.jpg We used that heat pleated vinyl years ago on the door panels and package tray of my brothers Bel Air. It worked out well & the price was nice ! A few years later I redid the panels in our wagon and was able to find a nice Gold vinyl w sewed diamond pleats & padded backing also pretty cheap but off of Etsy this time. He might try checking thier offerings before he orders material.

I am fairly frugal (extremely cheap), so I just went to Hobby Lobby and purchased vinyl and 3/8" foam padding and glued it all down and it looked great. It was textured but they had plain also.

Still haven’t done anything as far as sourcing material for the package tray. But, thanks for all the ideas! We will do something soon. On another topic, I was going through a local antique store Wednesday and came across a pretty nice 1959 Oklahoma license plate. So, I got it for Silas for Christmas. We can run YOM tags in this state, so I guess we will see if we can register it on Pinky. Shhhh...no one tell Silas since he won’t get it until tomorrow. :D

Haven’t done a package tray in years, but we were really cheap. Used cheap or free carpet remnants, whatever we could get. Even used some **** carpet a few times…what were we thinking?

The low pile carpet usually looked pretty good. Once you screwed down a couple of 6x9 speakers, it wasn’t going anywhere. Black was the preferred color, but depending on car and interior colors and what we could get a hold of, sometimes used white or blue or tan. Helped a buddy with an Impala, it was white with red interior, we actually found some red low pile that matched the floor carpet, end result looked factory.

Well, not sure what may happen shortly, but Silas had someone offer him a very attractive amount of money for Pinky even though it wasn’t for sale. He is debating, so we will see. To be honest, this may be a good thing if he sells so we can focus on his pickup project that has been sitting too long. More to come...

I'd say let it go and finish the truck. Buyers are hard to find in this market and if God puts one on the doorstep don't slam the door!

The time to sell is when you don't have it for sale but have someone who wants to buy it now! :)

haha the horse trading has begun. I remember making my first sale (when it wasn’t for sale) but I sure liked the cash in my hand. Been doing it ever sense. Good for him which ever way he goes

Deal fell through so Pinky will be staying with Silas at least for a while. He had lots of plans for the money, but seems it wasn’t meant to be.

Back in the day my dad redid the package tray of his 60 BelAir. Had the guy sew two humps length wise out towards the ends or like one behind each p***engers head. From behind it looked like two pillows lying on the tray.

Since Pinky hasn't headed down the road (yet), Silas drove her up way out of his way on his way to vo-tech to take his old man to lunch on his birthday. :D
