Projects Shop organization part 2, what to use for frames and loose body parts

Now, before all the comedians start describing their own loose body parts. I would like to specify that these are car parts not your man parts.

Here's the deal. I have my 36 pickup blown apart into a thousand pieces. The frame is on a couple of engine stands, the cab is on a dolly, the bed is leaned up against the wall, fenders are strewn about.

I need to build something that has a low center of gravity that I can mount the bare frame to, since there is no suspension. The frame has a tendency to want to flip over on the engine dollies I have now, so that would be even more exaggerated if I mounted a cab and bed.

I figure I can't be the only guy to have this issue, so post up some pics of your solutions. I want mine to be mobile until I have the time/money to get back to it.

 

For storage, or for working on also?

 

Mainly for storage. I am trying to clean the shop up. I have 2,000 sf and maybe 250 sf of it is usable, the rest is covered in future projects. I just need something I can put casters on that I can roll around easily.

 

Frames wait outside.

I built this one for working on and it can be disassembled.

 

you just need a dolly with a couple pieces of steel (or wood or whatever) sticking up on one side of it. Kind of like a portable wall, to lean it up against (but baling wire it in place so it won't fall over)

 

Aeroman built a damn nice cart here. Adjustable and can break down to store. I saved it several years back to build a similar. Body and frame.

@Dave Mc has something similar to what I am looking for. I want something with a skeleton, so that the frame can be removed. Really what I may need is a couple of dollies that can be bolted on each end, that can be taken off and hung on a wall. The only problem is they would want to fold under I am afraid.

You have room to hang the frame? Vertical or horizontal on the wall? from the rafters? My Altered frame hangs above the wood furnace.

 

Probably, but the idea is to consolidate and get all the parts in one spot. so that the footprint is just that of the frame.

 

Build a crate just oversized for the frame with 6" wheels on each corner and 4' sides.
Everything will fit inside and since it's a rectangle you can determine where space allows it to be.

 

That's how I do it too.

 

Wait, what? Shops are supposed to be organized? Why didn't I think of that...

 

Not for frames but I have a small mezzanine that has my 27 roadster on top and a 29 pickup underneath. Mine is a smallish but you could do something similar and even make it freestanding and moveable with casters

I saved those photos, That is a nice setup for small bodys in tight spaces.

I was going to save the frame out from under a 1-1/2 ton I salvaged the cab off for a frame table for my projects but it had a pickup load of scrap iron welded to it to hold pumps, a tank and motors and what not from when it had been a water truck in the fields. More scab welding than you can write home about.
As far as something to store and move the frame around on by yourelf it may come down to what you can come up with that works and does the job but doesn't cost a lot. Maybe a less than stellar light weight boat trailer that comes no title for pocket change that you can weld a couple of cross pieces on to set the frame on and be able to roll it around. I've got a hitch ball on my riding lawn mower and move the home made tear drop trailer frame that my frame for my 48 sits on around the yard. The Tear drop frame is made out of old Model T frame rails and has wide 5 hubs on it.

 

Depends how much room and height you have. 2 car garage would be cantilever or roll over the top of the frame with enough space for the cab and bed with body parts in it.

The open floor plan would be used industrial shelves with the frame, cab, bed and body parts stored nicely on them.

 

I had some 2x4 and 2x6s left over from my shop construction. I put this together with #8 x 3" screws and some hardware store dolly wheels.
I'm not using it right now so I just unscrewed it and have saved the parts.

This is what I have now. Note the parts explosion around it.

 

Sadly the 32 pick up has become the catch all but you can see the rolling table the cab sits on.

 

I put a frame with my lift on top of a section of scaffolding with casters on. Moveable and can store stuff under it, should fit in a 8 ft ceiling. Use pulleys if you don't have a lift?

 

My neighbor complained about my quarter panel leaning against Her brick wall. Among other things. She did a land survey to prove her point. Be careful what you put outside.

 

The issue is that I live on a main road. My shop sits on the highway. If I put anything outside it's visible from passing traffic.

 

You gotta tie the engine stands together buddy. Otherwise they flop all over like nuts on a Great Dane.

I'm not sure if my U joint on this end helped or not so I will say it did...definitely.
