"The Pond," because Lions was "the beach" -- so something associated with water---that's what I was told, could have been a bench racing tale.

can't tell you how long i've waited for mention of "unsprung" elmer...thanks!

  11. Dave, the half mile was about as much fun as I ever had with the roadster. When you've made a half mile run you really feel like you got your money's worth! One of the biggest thrils was trying to get the 40 Ford brakes to get stopped before you were in the dirt. (Which I did, once)

  13. Actually, this is St. Louis' Jim Guthrie, who had sponsorship from Dick Harrell. Jim also had a Harrell-sponsored Camaro flopper later on.

Flag start at a small town drag strip. Tracks like this dotted the country back when it was fun.

  22. Jack it up on the air jacks, start it, rpms up and drop it. You just have to hope you don't drive over a large nut or bolt with that seat. Jeff Jahns was from the Jahns Pistons company family; pretty well known for cast pistons back in the 50's and 60's, then morphed into J and E forged pistons. Back in the day everyone had an idea they wanted to try. It sure made it interesting.
