Looking online and having a hard time finding anyone that is selling rear bumpers for a '34 Ford Pickup* (see attached photo). Would appreciate any ***istance. I believe this is what I need (excluding hardware): Rear spreader bar (mounts to the frame next to fuel tank) Bumper brackets (mounts to flange on rear spreader bar and frame?) Bumper (mounts to bumper brackets) Is that correct? Does the p***enger car components work as a replacement? I wouldn't think so. Thank you for the help! *Frame and fenders are '34 Ford, bed is custom, cab is an International
32-34 Ford Pickups didnt come with rear bumpers originally to my knowledge. If they did they would need to use their own brackets to the frame to extend it past the bed. p***enger car brackets would have the bumper under the bed due to the overhang of the bed and will not work. If anything the rear bumper would just a be a reused front if anything.
@Taboo56Chevy thank you for the response. Do you know if the rear spreader bar was original? The frame has the mounting for it (see in the photo above) and the vin is a pickup so I am ***uming that they did but I am not finding any. The dimensions seem to be the same as a p***enger car however. @manyolcars no hijacking the thread. The left side and right side are super clean original except for the right rear fender which currently is fibergl*** and will be replaced as soon as I can find a decent one. If I find more, I will DM you.
I built this truck several years ago. The straight bumper came with the project and I was told the bumper was rare and the same as sedan delivery. However I have seen some sedan delivery’s bumpers and they look nothing like this. It’s hard to see in the picture but the spreader bar came to me with these “angle wings” (factory looking) brackets on the ends of the spreader bar. They pointed to the rear of the truck and angled flat but not 90°’s to the frame. I think the spreader bar was a p***enger car part. The bumper irons we had looked like p***enger car irons too but I didn’t have anything to compare them to. We liked the look of the bumper being tucked under the bed. Using the parts we had, I believe we made some 3” “extensions” out of round tubing to act as a spacer between the spreader bar tabs and the bumper irons. It was our understanding that if we had actual truck parts that the bumper would stick out way past the back of the bed. We did not like that idea and we’re satisfied with the way it came out. Sidebar: I can’t remember but I think 33 p***enger cars had angle mounts on the rear splash pan and the 34 is straight, like a 36 Ford. If I was starting from scratch I think I’d look for 36 irons. I hope this makes sense and helps you.
manyolcars United Pacific makes a really nice 33/34 pickup rear fender with the mounting holes in the right place.
Thank you @Jim Bouchard it helps a lot! I like that you kept the bumper tight to the bed. Great looking truck and can't wait to finish this one. I am going for a '60s custom truck theme with the finishing and definitely don't want to keep her in primer. This is what I found online for the spreader bar you are referring to. It might be the same one and the seller did confirm it is for p***enger cars. Don't you think? The distance end to end would fit the distance I have so maybe it'll work and then use some bumper brackets from there with a spacer as you did on yours.
32/33/34 pickups never had a rear bumper. It's popular on 33/34 trucks, to use a truck front bumper on the rear with custom made brackets.
My 33 pickup has one, but I could not tell if you ifs original or not as the truck has been a hot rod since the 70s and before my ownership. A p***enger car should work as the frame is the same between and a p***enger car and a pickup.
Looks like a nice start, yeah 36 is the first year that I actually see on pickups and is available with repop stuff. For a bumper to actually work on 32-34 pickup with a stock length box, you would have to built quite the extension for the brackets. If you box was shortened you could then maybe get 32 p***enger car brackets or 33/34 car brackets to then work to mount a bumper. My box is pretty much lopped off just ahead/behind the rear frame horn for the spreader bar. My spreader bar is how the wiring is hid and ran across for the p***enger tail light and antenna.
