    Id drive it.

I'd also make it into a coupe using doors and B pillars from a donor car but I think that goes without saying.

    Looks clean.

  9. Congratulations on the new project. Question, does the boss ( your wife) know about this?

  10. Congrats Anthony! I was just wondering... :D And, not all of us can accidentally buy one.

Nice, looks pretty solid! Nice interior too.

  13. Well
    I have a 2 door parts car.
Will probably use a few pieces on this 4 door.
But at this moment it’ll stay a 4

  15. 17 hour round trip today.
Headed out at 4:30 this morning with the wife. I almost called the guy last night to tell him I changed my mind. Wife said it’s just another adventure, we can check it out.
The guy I bought the merc from bought it from a friend. I guess his friends dad bought it in 66. That’s the date on the title.
Car has headers with duals and had a 2 carb set up but family kept that piece.
If I got the story correct, the front was damaged and it sat since the late 70s in side
I’ve only seen parts of the floor from underneath but they look good. The trunk floor looks great. I guess the only major issue is it will need rockers. So far, it seems the inners are solid. Has a few dents and dings but the car is really solid.
The car is sporting some old curve feelers and this custom vinyl interior.
That will stay. Plan to post cleaned up pics soon.

  17. Plans:
    Make it go and stop.
    Fix rockers
Drive the crap out of it.
I’ll get new glass cut. I have another rear door vent window.
I need a drivers side skirt.
Mods: not sure. Depends on engine choice
Flathead look clean but it’s been sitting.
I’ve got several other choices. I was kinda hoping it had the normal flathead trans. This 51 has the later style bell. That rules out the SBC adapter I have (Id use a 283)and the yblock adapter I found. I’ve got a 292 that needs built but is buildable. A free low mile 272 if I want it. It would probably run as is. Was overhauled decades ago and been sitting.
I’ve got a small port 3x2 intake that would work with it. Plus a friend that’s volunteered a set of Merc Yblock valve covers.
    Also have a SBF/t5 a 352 with an 3+1 OD
I’d like to keep 3 pedals in it. For now anyway.
Has what looks like some fresh turned drums in the trunk.
I would probably keep the stock rear with an OD trans.
I’ll consider body mods while I cruise it …hopefully

That Merc has no idea how lucky it is.
Minimal pain makeover, a new lease on life.

Cool, A pretty solid more door 51 with what appears to have a decent interior that you can put together and drive beats the daylights out spending years changing it to a two door and not having one to drive.
The Y block bellhousing will bolt right to that trans as will most full size Ford stick bellhousings up to 64.
From this 2016 thread that seems to have been put together to answer a queston you had then it looks to be a bit bigger challenge than I thought but can be done. Technical - Y-Block in a Merc (49-51) & build-up, chop, etc | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com)
The biggest challenges in hot rodding seem to be putting later Ford engines in Ford products that design of engine didn't come in.

    Congrats ! Kool, Enjoy.

  23. Thanks.
I’ve studied that thread. Really cool car.
So if this late 51 trans fits bellhousings up to 64, that could also help fitting an FE??
    Hmmmmm
Right now I’m thinking either the 272 or 283. Yes I have a 292 but the 272 is much closer to running. Plus the tri power set up I have is for the smaller port heads.
I’ve got a early SBF bell but that set up probably won’t work with my later SBF engine
I’ve got a 221 or 260 engine and trans in a 49 Mercury parts car

  25. I’ll probably get locked in the stocks and stoned for my choice, but I’d put the 283 in it and keep the three pedals. Very cool sled, great find!

  26. I have no brand loyalty.
The 283 is really close to being ready. I have a sbc tri power intake but need to round up better carbs.

    but….. I have a 331 Hemi as well.

the wife asked about it last night on the way home. Heads are built, I have new forged veniola pistons for it.
Plus 2 extra 331s with accessories and pulleys. That would still be the more expensive route with what’s done. Plus shoehorning that thing in
One of the problems with having options is having too many.
Im kinda wanting the quickest route to get it moving

  27. That transmission will bolt to an FE. It will be OK unless you abuse it. They will not take much abuse. I broke 9 of them with a 292 when I was 16.

They were $15 each at the junk yard so it wasn't but so bad breaking them.
