Projects Bought a Mercury on purpose

  1. I could have landed a space ship at school and got the same reaction.
One reason I’m not big on “do not touch” signs (and yea, I understand why) because nothing beats sitting, turning the wheel, touching….. experiencing the entire car.

Great catch Anthony, and it's good to see the students jump right on it. Having a nice interior and a decent body really moves a project along.
If that flathead doesn't cooperate, I vote for the 352 FE with the 3+1.

I've got a buddy, that I go to lunch with every Wednesday, that just closed his old school body shop and sold his modern one. I'll ask him if he has any 'spare' tools. I use a slapping spoon lots especially on high crown stuff. I've made all my own from leaf springs and a torch and a grinder.
A guy can't have too many tools...

  4. I just left a friends shop.
I guess I forgot the half dozen hammers I left there :):):)
I also have a leaf spring spoon.
    Works great

  5. Was able to get under the car today.
Look great. Just old undercoating and some oil. Nice old paint underneath the old undercoat.
Intake gasket should be in tomorrow. We’re gonna give the flatty a chance. Car is showing 21k miles and has a 1970 inspection sticker. Pads on the pedals look great. Hmmmmmmmmm
Engine is painted red but looks like it was pulled to paint it.
Picked up some rear dump y block exhaust manifolds. So I guess that’s plan B

I picked up this ford/AMC toploader with Laycock OD
Wonder if this can be adapted to fit the y or stamped merc bell?
I guess I got some research to do

  7. The grill was tweaked. Still needs a little more work but the twist is gone. Should straighten on up fine

We’ll mount the front bumper back on and pull it while the car is on the frame bench.
I’m digging these massive bumper guards

  9. As I stated on the congratulatory thread for your Buick, you are aware that you have to raise the bar on this build, right?

"It's just another road trip. You'll know when you get there."

Sometimes, the wives just totally kick butt. Our support. Our advocates. Even able to repeat our very own words back to us when needed. Three cheers for Mrs. Myrick!

Where is the body shop school at in the Twilight Zone . The 47 Mercury I hauled home needs some frame eyeballing and maybe a tweak.

It’s amazing that You are guiding Your students with real metal and allowing them to work on Your Mercury. Your planting the seeds in their minds that will continue to grow and keep old cars on the road .

Of course, totally kidding Anthony, it doesn't matter at all where you live... you'd still be an exceptionally good bad example for the rest of us. :)

If your Merc used the stamped steel 1/2 bell housing Model Engineering (MEC) in Ohio makes an adapter to mate a Ford top loader 4 speed with the wide bolt pattern like the AMC unit in the photo you post. Not sure about the input shaft length etc. but it might be an option. They have a web site but IMO it sucks. Best to call. You'll probably have to leave a message but you will get a call back. I had one of the MEC adapters a few years back and it was high quality.

  23. Looks much better already! So, assuming the glass guy will be there sometime today to replace the windshield?

Hmm...I think I like the stock look at least for now considering the rest of the overall look.

  24. We started removing the WS.
I have a glass shop near by that a student works at.
They will cut new the glass
They did the v-butt WS in my bus

Looks like the “kids”are having fun. Encourage them to take pics…if phones are legal there. Wish I had some car related pics from my youth, with cell phones there is no excuse not to.
FYI, 1952-53 Olds wheel covers should snap right on…

  28. Agreed! In all seriousness, this is about the coolest thread to watch I have seen in a while. Including the students to do the work as they learn about this old stuff will hopefully end up giving them enough interest to carry the torch into the future. Well done Anthony!

Stretched the bumper using the bench and a tower. Worked out kinks with a pipe wrench. The slight twist will be removed after it’s all bolted together.
