I like patina. If it's because I'm lazy, I'll own up to that. But I can't say I've ever been called lazy. Usually I'm called lucky.

I don't mind the shiny stuff, until it gets its first ding.

  5. Fake patina, black hair dye on a 70 year old gold chainer, rolled up socks in the pants.... it's ALL bull shit! Be honest about what your car is, ferchistsake!

I have no intention of ever painting my car. Last time it was painted was in '28. roadster .jpg

    Awe, quit your bitchin'! :D

I don't mind real patina. I don't even mind fake patina if it is done nicely.

What I absolutely hate though is gloss clear over patina. If you must do clear over patina at least use flat or satin. Nothing worse than shiny patina! Okay, end of my bitchin'. :p

I think the term "patina" is overused. I see some original cars with aged paint that have a certain charm to them. Lots of cars that people consider patina are just rust buckets.

Just like with artist’s oil paintings, patina depends…some have the look, some not so much! I personally like all types of patina…if it has the “look”. 050078EA-41A7-42F6-BD88-59B1419D250D.png 41AFE16C-FCA7-4B36-9E8F-A5A463D1FAC4.png
Two pics of same deuce sedan. Somewhat neglected looking patina vs patina with “improvements” and very slick!
IMHO…would walk past 5 mint deuces with $15,000 paint jobs to check it out!

I’ve got shiny ones and patina ones. Patina ones are way more fun to drive. Not concerned about rock chips or door dings. Car show wouldn’t be any fun if everything was done nice.

Strange how trends come and go. In my day of the dino's, if we got a "patina" car we couldn't wait to change it--immediately put it in primer, then save for the cool paint.
Whatever happened to leisure suits and bell bottoms??

  12. I agree. Worn original paint looks fine but clearcoating over nastyass rust is just trashy looking. My 2¢

  13. 15 years with this one, It looked mostly like this when we got it, probably a little better. Its a driver and I am kind of tired of it looking like crap (especially the interior) but the thought of a full tear down and years to do the work make it a non starter with another non-operational project ongoing. My wife, who's car it actually is, would like it to be painted. She built the motor, I might have to teach her how to do paint and body.

  16. Damn....to bad I don't give a damn what you or anyone else thinks.

You old guys complain about the death of the hobby a lot, then complain about the young guys and how they do things. I imagine it's a lot like the talk down at the beauty shop critiquing younger women's hair and clothing choices..

I also have shiny ones and rough ones. But I don't worry about the dings and chips and whatnot that happens to the shiny ones, either! They're so much more fun if you keep in mind that you can add your own real patina by using it as a car.

  20. I'm kinda stuck in the middle. Mine was just butt oogly in the "raw" so I primed it with urethane primer. The hard shell finish makes it easy to clean. 34side1_15_1.jpg 34americans2.jpg

Your car, looking like that, is great! In my opinion, your shoebox was as good as it gets. Neither one is a "show car" but they show you care. If that car was full of rust with visible patches and holes, it just wouldn't be right. I'd have to question how you took care of the rest of it.

Havnt thought of it that away, good point. It just sucks getting that first scratch or dent when you have hundreds of hours paint time into something.

yeah, but after the fifth or sixth, it just doesn't matter any more. Especially if it still ends up on the cover of a magazine, with the dents!

Some rust looks good. To others, rust is gold. Rust to rust as patina is to wood and bronze.

What is fake patina? If you have a nice old car with faded paint and 1 or 2 rust holes, and you fix the rust and blend the finish to look as though it was not rusty, is this fake patina?
