Only the part that you worked on is fake patina. The rust holes were real patina. But if you do a good enough job, you'll only be lying to yourself, since no one else will know.

  3. I once saw a rusty '59 Vette at a car show. I think that they wanted it to be as cool as the other rusty cars. I have to admit that I did admire the skill and patience required to make it look like that.

I like old paint. I am not a big fan of rust. I have driven my share of rusty cars but I am not especially proud of that fact. I do like older paint that has been preserved though.

I've been a bodyman/painter since I was a teenager and I must admit I see things for what they could be, a solid body is a great place to start hard to leave alone. But everyone has to do there own thing...

  6. This car belongs to Tom Busch (Kurt & Kyle's dad) it's got a red primer paint job and it's showing spots of rust streaking and it's a glass body.

Tom told me the primer had brake drum savings mixed in with the paint. HRP

  7. I like a good cantina and often go out fishing from the marina. I’m not wild about a hyena nor a concertina. I really dislike a subpoena but I’m sorry, no real concern over somebody else’s patina.

The word “patina” if changed to “originality” would help the cerfuzzle.
Original, in any condition is, original.
Fake patina is , I’ll just stop there…

A fine line, for me ;):D,between a few scratchs or a little fade ,still cool:cool:,. But then a little more, too me becomes" It needs fixing now.
I then see so called patina as; Some lazy guy is using excuses hiding in his own head, why not too work at the fix!!
    The most lame excuse ,often used;
Shiny paint cost too much < Only if your dreaming of super show job.*
Actually, shiny can be about the same cost as,or even less then many primers.
I've used High Gloss Rust-Oleum Enamel { I like Black } Takes a Qt primer, and Qt. high gloss,a Gal of thinner, a tiny bit of enamel hardener ,sandpaper n spot filler ,some tape,,and let dry for about month< before buff out! Total cost of all ,for my 28A roadster ,under $75.:D in 2012.
No paint job, will ever be good, with out hard smooth out work*****= The real hard part, that only cost you time an elbow work!!! No matter how much $$$$$$$$$ you blow on a fancy high $ paint,it will not smooth it out for you!!.
The real limit is,stop being lazy.
I'll put a close up pic of my Gloss Rust-Oleum Black { same as I've done a number of times in my back yard, starting in the late 1950s an still doing same way. FaceRearView.jpg

Where the body is original, unmolested and not full of holes the original factory finish can have real character. I do draw the line at interiors that smell of a combination of wet dog and mouldy potato sacks. Its not popular with the ladies!

  15. Fakepatina fiberglass car seen at Louisville last year. Got to admit, it was very well done with lots of layers of paint, almost an artists impression of what a rusty old car would look like.

  16. My roadster in my Avatar was built and painted in the late 1950's. I like it as it is. If someone else doesn't like it that is their problem. I had some tell me that it needs a paint job. I am 82 years old, and not physically, or financially able to do it over. It is a survivor, and I will keep it that way. I don't like fake patina, but I do like real patina. My license plate says "Old Rod". It is what it is.

  17. My coupe has REAL patina, earned from decades and decades of wear and tear. Still very presentable paint. This old drag car luckily has always been loved and not stored out side. And yes , she has plenty of bumps and some bruises. Because, Race car. Some of the fake patina jobs look cool to me, depends on the car and overall look. The Red paint on the coupe was done around 1969 and will remain .

Are dryer sheets traditional or should I try and find a box of NOS LUX laundry flakes?

That reminded me of my own experience. I take my 46 GMC to Home Depot all the time. One day I was there and when I was about to leave there was a lady in the car next to my truck waiting for her husband. She asked me about my truck and said to me "If you were charging for photos, you would have made a fortune!"

Patina is like so many other things. If you don't get it, you don't get it. I have shiny and patina, patina is more fun to me. Others' mileage may vary.

I'M GETTING TIRED OF SELF IMPORTANT DICKS YELLING AT EVERYONE.

Seriously, caps lock is very easy to turn off. As for patina, paint your car if you want it painted. I didn't build mine for you!

The fake patina fiberglass car is a poser made to look like something it's not. I have a 78 year old body with patina resulting from a number of scars and blemishes acquired from being in the wrong place at the wrong time on jobsites, some from different surgeries as well as a couple that I got during those "Here, hold my beer" moments. A guy I know who is in his early '20s has some tattoos depicting scars and open wounds that he had done on purpose. Not tattoos to cover existing scars but tattoos that are supposed to look like scars. To my knowledge, he's never felt pain except when he spilled his soy latte in his lap. In my opinion, my scars are patina, his are not.

I don't know why people get tattoos after trying to read my Grandpa's Royal Medical Corps when he was in his 80's...I pulled one way and my brother pulled the other to try and read it! I do have "life tattoos" otherwise known as scars!

Fake patina is only fake if you can tell it’s fake. Problem is, lots of cars, you can tell. It’s a real artistic skill to pull off convincingly.

I would think that is exceptable. Fake patina in my mind is those high dollar cars that are painted to look like they have patina. People can do what they like but I don't have to like it. In person I keep my comments to myself and would never trash any one's car.
