I agree and have used the round number thing to my advantage, especially online. If you have to put in a maximum bid, $51 is vastly superior to $50. The "soft close" feature of a lot of online auctions take some of the utility of that away, but still, it often works.

And the mantra I've always heard about multiple items is "the best deal is always the first one or the last one". Sometimes the first one is a bargain, people realize this, and bid up the last ones, but I've also seen where the first few of an item basically uses up all of the buyers, and once those other buyers bought what they wanted, the rest go for dirt cheap. In an 8 hour long auction, for example, I find most of the super dirt cheap deals are at the end, after everyone else spent all their money or left after buying the one thing they actually came for.

You guys have got me jonesing for summertime auctions again.

Don't get me wrong, I am usually a friendly nice guy unless you piss me off then I can be a pain in the behind. Like a different foreclosure there was 4 lots on a golf course and only 2 of us showed up. seemed like a nice guy so I made a deal before the auction started with him. I let him buy the corner lot I actually wanted to build on but I took the other three to flip and we got them a dollar over what the bank wanted. or at the other county where I bid the guy up there is usually a group of 4 of us that gets together afterwards and have breakfast at G. Webb and discuss what is coming up and who is a player on what for that week. We got along great and worked great together.

Anyways getting back to the auction here if people don't realize it there are more pictures on the auction website and multiple closeups on some of the cars and grills except no more of the one behind the possible plasma table that has peaked interest here. yes, I am being nice because I will be a spectator only here, we will be in a different direction when you need to pickup items, Georgia doesn't fit in this time but that happens.

No kidding can't wait for that season here to start. Don't get me started on those internet soft closes, I hate those. One auction not long ago screwed themselves out of money by doing that because I didn't want to buy the attachment accessories without knowing if I got the machine brought. by the time all the repeated soft closes ended and I won the machine, all the attachments sold, figure they lost about an extra $6500 that day.

Auctions have always been shady, even before on-line bids. I recall seeing guys in the crowd bidding items up and upon a signal from the auctioneer they bail out and hang the high bid on someone else. never buying items just bidding the price up. At the end of the sale they're riding home with the auction crew. Online bids, buyer premium, seller premium, just gave them a licence to steal.

Love auctions. Like others here I could probably write a book on the scores...and the mistake buys I have found at auctions.

Thats why it is so ridiculous when someone says, "They are still out there !!!!1".
They will be out there until the end of time.

I used to go to gun auctions back when we didn’t have a wait period on used firearms, the “first one of a few” in the auction going for the least amount of $$ was definitely right. It was even better if it happened before the auction relly got going.
I never pay attention to what others are doing though, never tried to “read the room” but bid a few times for what I was willing to pay, if it worked, fine, if not and I lost out by 5 bucks, I just figured it might have cost me a lot more than I wanted to spend.
Anyways, as mentioned before, heck of a nice collection of many things, no doubt it was a persons dream/obsession and joy to own.

I want to thank all you guys who have chimed in with their auction experiences. It's been a real educational experience and I hope some of what you've said sticks with me through this thing. After it's over, I hope that one of you has a spare room I can use after the divorce. ;)

  10. That certainly is a good collection. Tell your wife it is better than money in the bank. There is so much there, surely something will go at a good value. I am not sure everyone has the big dually and 3 axle trailer that pulled all that stuff in there, at their disposal. Happy hunting.

I usually bid fast. Then stop suddenly when I don`t want to go any higher. So, the other guy gets stuck. You never want the other people know what you are thinking. Never tell anybody what you are interested in.

  12. I NEED that low, black 40 coupe.

Well, I've got a spare bedroom. C'mon down!

  14. Oh, man! I can just see it now. Drain all of the savings accounts, attend the auction, buy the 40 for less than 50G and drive home. Then I'd have to sleep in my new coupe. Does it have a good heater?

Just tell her you accidentally bought it. It seems to work on here.

I get ya, but I’m not an auction goer much anymore. I’ve done what you’ve mentioned before early in the auction, sorta startles the guys that are “feeling it out” so to speak, works 50/50 I’d say.

I just hope my kids get a few competitors bidding when they do my sale to minimize the clean up;)

Don’t drain all the dollars, it’s winter. You’ll need to keep it running and filling it with gas ;)

@Rocky, Preview today, auction tomorrow. Only thing I found wrong with it was the MII front suspension.

If anyone goes to this auction, I'd love to see some pictures and hear about some results/prices.

Very nice looking '48. Almost everything in the inventory has an MII front end including this one but it does have a Ford in a Ford. 48 coupe.jpg

I'll be there tomorrow but I don't know if I'll make the next two weekends of the auction. Cars will go tomorrow along with some of the collectibles. I'm going for some of the smalls. I will make notes on prices. The website for the auction company is in the first post of this thread. The fellow who owned all this did some very nice work. I didn't see much of anything that I didn't like, other than his obsession with Mustang II suspension and a '29 Chevy 2 door that had clear coat shot over the crappy patina. 29 RPU, Chevy touring.jpg

If you're going to be there tomorrow, look for the handsome guy in the black HAMB hat. Let me know what you're bidding on so I don't screw you up.

  27. Unfortunately I will be bidding from home, which nets me an additional 5% on top of the 13% premium, as I have to run the kids around this weekend. I'm watching the cars and parts for a good deal, nothing in particular but I do like 40's and there are a few off them. All the other items are of no interest. I need another car like the old hole in the head but I cannot help myself trying to sneak in a low ball that sticks. If there is one you need PM me and I'll hold off as well.

Thanks, I appreciate that but I won't be bidding on any of the cars. There's no room, no budget and no sneaking it past the wife. My daughter and I were there quite a while today and there weren't a lot of people there. There's one cabinet there that's got some shiny stuff that I hope no one else has spotted. Sounds good, right?

  30. I just registered tonight and I am bidder number 126. That is not a lot of competition. Might be our turns to catch a break. I didn't even bother with looking at the next sales as one buy at this one will bust the bank.
