Technical Broken ,rusted spark plug, SBC

    Use a pneumatic needle scaler to clean the area around the plug, then get your chisel out to collapse the thin sheet metal shell, as I said before.

    Once you clean the scale off with the needle scaler, it won’t be so intimidating.

    Sounds like some of you guys don’t know what a plow truck is, much less have ever worked on one.

    I had the same problem on a ford 460 engine. A shop broke a plug of a left just the metal threaded part broke off. They wanted to charge $1200.00 to fix it. I turned the engine over to top dead center and kept P.B.Blaster on it for a few days. I used an Easy out from Harbor freight that fit perfect. I tapped it in snug and heated it several times with a propane torch and attempted to remove it several times while it was hot. It finally came out. I saved my dad (his truck) a lot of money and a big headache. Good luck and be patient.

  4. I honestly can't even tell where the spark plug is :eek:

    I have drilled out a plug that broke below the hex then just unwound the plug threads. As mentioned above, I am not even sure head removal is an option here. That is one UGLY mess and I wouldn't even think of proceeding without first spending a week or more with a needle scaler.

    I will say this, I have seen a Pontiac 301 where the head rotted through above an exhaust port. There might not be much left after you go at it with a needle scaler. Have you ever watched a raccoon wash a sugar cube :D

    I'd air chisel the crap out of the #1 circle, then the #2 would get a grinding to sound metal enough to weld a plate to all around. Then I'd die grind it down on the side, slide a 13/16 six point and impact it off.

    Ha, With beewax in the plug center hole. ....First a chisel to remove the mess then a large burr to clean the area and actually see the plug shell near the seat in the head. Ok , now we are getting somewhere....Then I was chipping off rust by hand with a long screwdriver when a stream of coolant came from the head above a lower head bolt .The fucking head has a rust hole! The core plugs look rusty.......Gotta pull the engine...Oh well.........

    Then again some of us do and have. What happens when you blow through the casting with the scaler???

    You buy a new head.

    Actually, you probably buy a different engine at that point, as your “good running engine”. Isn’t a good running engine at this point.

    it still runs good,...lol.....I can pull the engine,replace the heads and core plugs...Or get another engine....Or just sell the truck as is....

    Man! That is one rusty engine! I think your only hope is to clean the area and the old plug and weld a nut on it. One other thing, folks have mentioned blowing air out through the plug hole to keep debris out of the cylinder, by putting an air compressor hose in the carb. Most air compressors have high pressure, but low volume of air and this cylinder will probably share an open intake valve with other cylinders. Might want to try a vacuum cleaner that has the blower option and duct tape it to the carb and turn the engine untill it intake valve is open. The vacuum ckeaner has low pressure but high volume! Might work! Good luck!

  18. in all by brothers shitboxes and plow trucks, i have never seen a head rust through...
    seems like you were messing with cigarette ash.
     
  19. Why not, get that plug out, mix up some JB Weld, plug the coolant leak hole, and put it back together? Sort of kidding!

    Our grandson wants the truck...He is one of them mud truck guys, huge tires and 600 hp BBC's...I feel sorry for the truck:D

    Well, heads toast right? So burn the outer head bolts off, hope that the ones under the valve covers cooperates with you, and take a gander inside.
    I’d guess but what was said, packed mud and snow sitting and leaching for months at a time, took its toll.
    See, it ran, and you went and tried to make it run better!! ;)

    The engine came out of a badly rusted 95 plow truck.....The 66,opps o/t ,has some minor rust in the usual places...Grandson has big and small block Chevys.....He would like to use it to tow the big mudtruck but an older 3/4 ton is way over it's weight limit...

    I will try my best to explain it to you and G-son ... I first read and understood the complete thread and commented on it on Thursday. I was the one (on Thursday) who suggested that he may be "washing a sugar cube" and sadly, I was correct. Then Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday came and went. On Tuesday of the next week ... 5 days after I initially read the thread, I visited this thread once again and saw the "my grandson wants the truck, huge tires, 600hp BBC" comment. Although I clearly remembered the picture of the rotten mess of an engine, enough days had passed since I had initially read the entire thread, that I had forgotten that the engine had been transplanted into a different vehicle (I can honestly say, having seen the pictures of the rotten engine, "running well" or not, I would not have chosen to transplant that engine into anything and yes, I do live in the "rust belt, salt on the roads" part of Canada). I do not make a habit of reading a thread from start to finish each and every time I visit ANY thread. In this case, enough time had passed since the initial reading, that I simply forgot that this engine was no longer nested in its original chassis. I made a mistake and it won't be my last :rolleyes:

    I agree you, borntoloze, apparently I missed the one post where the OP stated that while chipping away his broke through the head! And I have been following this thread fairly good , I thought! It’s a small post and Evidently I missed it, and chimed in with the “ weld a nut on it” crowd!
    Apparently I have a life outside HAMB , also!

    If the ceramic is gone take a torch and heat the rest if the plug read hot let it cool and remove it

    Just set the whole damned thing on fire and maybe the rust will turn into a solid casting again! :D
