A serious "Oh Shit" moment. I hope that the driver didn't get hurt. We had the same thing happen in the early 1960's in a 1955 Chevrolet convertible at Connecticut Dragway.

No, that is not "Gidget" real or the movie version. The movie Gidget couldn't surf, so the studio used a green screen. The real life Gidget is a good surfer and surfed Malibu almost every time it broke. Kathy Zuckerman is her name and here is a classic photo of her.

But, researching surf history and forms of transportation, the photo of Kathy Kohner Zuckerman popped up showing her loading or unloading her single fin longboard at world famous Malibu Surfrider Beach from the rear of her 46-47 Buick convertible. Malibu was the home of the movie, Gidget. We all loved the movie and the surf oriented life style for young folks. The Gidget in the movie was the real life, edited version of Kathy Kohner Zuckerman’s growing up years. Yes, Kathy Kohner Zuckerman could actually surf, so no need for a green screen.

Malibu Point PCH parking area. The Gidget movie shows what her life was as a teenager growing up surfing in Malibu and the surrounding areas. The photo was taken on Pacific Coast Highway, right in front of the world famous, Surfrider Beach at Malibu Point. These spots are the premium. It took us many times to figure out when to get there from Long Beach, for the pristine Southern Hemisphere waves. But, once there, it was open the doors between surf sessions for the best seats in the house. (besides riding those great waves)

Despite the cute, non surfing movie star, everyone loved the movie and the storyline. So, there is that. But, today, the Malibu Colony has a lot of Hollywood actors and celebrities that can actually surf and they have fun paddling out in cold water anytime they get a chance.

My wife's mom was a small woman also driving around in a Buick convertible as her own car when they were living in Pacoima, CA back in the 1950s. She was small, but could handle that big convertible well, although she did not surf. She fell into that "women and convertibles" theory back in the 1950s. Her daughter still wants a convertible, but has settled on a cool sporty station wagon... YRMV
