Technical Paint Compatability

    Can I paint over an acrylic urethane single stage with a clear urethane
    Im doing a partial metal flake over a single stage acrylic urethane
    as always thank you HAMB

    Yes. Don't sand it to aggressive, I'd say 600 grit is the roughest. 800 would be better.

    Did the base paint have catalyst in it?

  5. You’re probably good on an older paint job.
    If worried, test a small area on the car.

    As long as the base color was properly applied and hardener was used you should be fine. Sand it with 800 grit and go for it

    Just a question, why should the base matter if the urethane clear has held on good? Unless he bust threw the clear then the base would matter?

    He said it was a single stage urethane, so there is no clear on it presently.

    Let's aliviate some concerns. If it's a urethane of any kind it needed a catalyst/hardener to cure. That's been standard fare since the early 80s. Scuff n shoot. You're ½ ready to go already, asked the right question...;)
