That was my friend Willie "The Welder" Feyh's stocker that he drove around in NYC in 65. He had to put a roof section on it, maybe a sedan floor and firewall to a coupe back half, and then painted it black.

    Pat,
From what I have been able to find out I believe that it was Mag Stein from Connecticut. I have read that the car had a hot 283 and have seen several pictures of it with the front wheels in the air. It looks like the rear fenders were molded to the body and the hood scoop is unique. You would probably know more about it than me or have some friends that do.

I did some digging and found some more pictures of it.

The search continues for the identification of one of the last unknown Willys Sedan Gas Coupe/Sedan Class racers from 1959...

    Hello,
Let’s remember, only the pro guys from the top magazines had 35mm cameras. Most were rangefinders, but at least the negative was larger/clearer than most brownie cameras. If the brownie camera had a better lens, then we all would be seeing better photos from those that used the brown box cameras.

So, most photos other than those from the Nationals in 58 were in black and white.
We struggled to get some good color photos as young teens, but our selections were limited as per our budget for the activity. Those European 35mm Rangefinder cameras were out of our league.

So, my question to the folks with the early information of these racers at Riverside Raceway… Are there any photos or identification of the cool, powerful, red primer, 1941 Willys Sedan?

What is not to like? A red primered Willys Sedan, lots of power, great looks and one of the earliest Willys Sedan competitors in action. It was late in the afternoon of a Winter day in December 1959. It was cold in the morning when we arrived just at the gates were opened.

We got set up, got something to eat and started our wandering with jackets in place. But, being in Riverside, an inland city compound, it started to get hot and then it became t-shirt weather.

When I took these separate films, it was my 4th location on top of the tall cliffs in the afternoon. It was jacket time again when the sun started its descent. The starting line film shows the power. The cliff side shot also shows the power to pull away and win hands down.

The questions remain: Who owned the Willys Sedan, who drove it and what was inside to make go?

A reward for your efforts and old file keeping. Also, what class was it competing in during the day… The window lettering is a jumbled mess.

Can anyone read the poster on the driver’s door? (A/Gas?)

It might be advertising another drag race coming up in January 1960, but who and where?

The prep time it took back in those early days led a lot of young builders to skip the colorful finish paint until the records were in hand or close to getting some notoriety. There was nothing wrong with a red primer paint or others in the same category prior to going racing.

My brother and I fell into that category with our red primer paint and a powerful 671 SBC motor that came within a .20 second off of the national record for C/Gas.
