I thought it was me in the 56 black Victoria in the background. Just like the one I drove in HS even to the removed wheel covers.

Barry was a special guy and fun to be around. After Don Carr drover their lakester over 300 at El Mirage, Barry looked over at me during record tech inspection and said.. “not too bad for a Jew Boy huh JD”….. I’ll never forget that.

    Hello,

One of the coolest drag racing teams from the early days of Lion’s Dragstrip.

My conversations with Dr. Richard Tapia brought back many memories of those early days. This sleek injected Chevy FED was a perennial winner in the dragster class. He told me of a family historic event that happened at Lion’s Dragstrip in 1959.

In discussing the race between the so called mis-matched race vehicles, Dr. Richard Tapia told me that everyone was nervous and afterwards, excited for the results. Here is a photo he sent me to commemorate the event at Lion’s Dragstrip in 1959.

The Tapia Brothers' injected SBC dragster did beat the Art Afron’s Green Monster. It was called: "Bobby Slays the Green Monster." In 1959 in a highly publicized match race, Bobby Tapia in the Tapia Bros SBC race car called “Almost Grown,” beat Art Afrons in the big Green Monster #11.

They were fast in the class and gave the drag racing world a “one for the books” historic event.

One of the rare times that my brother filmed the Lion’s Dragstrip action. I was taking a break for a nice snack and was standing at the starting line in the tower side of the dragstrip. My brother was in the stands with his friends. (sharp eyes will see a black 58 Impala in the return timing slip road… not our 58 Impala…) This place was legal as it is behind a chain link fence and next to the “protective” blast shield. Ha!

For an injected SBC motor, the FED of the Tapia Brothers was very loud.

I can't remember the year it was, but I was all-in with Thrifty Auto at Bakersfield. I rooted for them to take it all! Someone out there please give me a little information on this.
