  1. The only thing any car needs to be cool is me.

Nice dagmires on that 61 Chevy

  3. Yes it was. I only owned one 4 door the entire time. A '58 roadmaster hard top. It was cheap and I needed a car. LOL

I think 4 doors became popular for 2 reasons, with people like us I think that availability. I still avoid them personally, but I am inclined to drive 2 door cars that are equally uncool for our generation. LOL

I think the other reason is that for more then a generation 2 doors have not been mass produced and the people who carry weight with the manufacturers prefer them. The younger set is growing up with 4 doors being most common and they are the ones replacing us.

This reminds me of a guy I worked with in the '70s. he had a sweet sweet five seven 2 door hard top. Candy red, quick blah blah.

He only waxed it from the doors forward and often only washed the tops of the fenders and the hood. I asked him once why? He said, "When I am driving that is the only part I see."

I have had a 36 phaeton on my mind for several months that's been for sale. but I would need a stroker cap for it to really be cool. yuck on the bell bottoms & 4 doors that have a roof that are not wagons!

  5. You can still buy those?

10 years old, I was a traffic boy at school. I'd stand and watch every parent drive up to let their kids off, then step out and stop traffic when kids had to cross.
One morning, I see an almost new '46 Ford Four door Super DeLuxe drive up to my corner, stop at the stop sign, and the driver waved. It was 'Hot Rod Harry' Angelo, 23, owned Angelo's Market w/his Dad.
Harry had hot rods, two '29 roadsters most recent. He also had 2 little kids.
He drove across the street, Man, that thing was shiny black...Lowered, skirts, and 2 chrome exhaust tips out the back. I noticed there was no chrome strips on the trunk, just smooth black. It was detail city, just beautiful!
I thought, "Harry even suped up the family sedan!"
After school, I happened by the store in town. Harry showed me the new car, Wow, dual everything!
Dual pipes; dual carbs; dual Appletons!
    Never forgot that car...
My lifelong friend Mark gifted me a rust free '47 mor door that is original black paint...
NO RUST! Papers and all, I feel blessed.
Pal Tracy sold me a pair of skirts, yeah... Harry will be proud.

  8. I grew up in the 60's and 4 doors were not considered cool and in my neck of the woods threre were no hot rod 4 doors, that was the 60's today most of the younger guys here cut their teeth on 4 door Honda's and Toyota's, they don't have problems with 4 doors and really prefer what us old farts have passed on for years.

I finally embraced the 4 doors and have owned 2 Deuce 4 doors and loved them, It took many years but I can appreciate a lot of the multiple door cars now. HRP

    4-doors are parts cars.

  10. More than half of you guys were conceived in the back seat of a 4 door and you know it. :p

Your mom thought 4 doors were cool. :D

  11. I had a lot of fun in my buddy’s quad cab 59 but that’s my two door in the background:p 64A66E4D-E93E-4694-91D9-695F97533A6A.jpeg

So I'm reading through this thread, I posted earlier about 4 door cars being acceptable. I've owned a bunch of them, hot rodded several, I still stand on that. The 1st car I drove was the 4 door Olds.

Thinking back, the 1st car I picked out and bought myself was a 2 door coupe (late 60s version). The second car I picked out and made payments on was also a 2 door. The 3rd one was a beater 4 door, after that, there were so many cars and trucks its hard to figure what arrived when. Buying, selling, and parting out cars was my way of having fun, I was pretty good at it. For our personal use, we always had 3 vehicles for my wife and I. With the kids, my wife always preferred a 4 door car. I always had a beater as a go to work ride, it was usually whatever I found cheap, of a truck I might have needed. Then there was the hot rod, those were usually 2 door cars, but several 4 doors was added to the mix. Few guys suspected fast 4 door cars, so they were easy pickings.
For most of the 16 years my kids were going to school, I lived in the country, it wasn't unusual to have 8-10 cars and usually a truck (always 2 doors) or two sitting around. Realistic, probably over 200 cars and trucks have passed through my hands. Probably about 1/2 of the cars were 2 door cars. Most people with kids bought 4 door cars, most single guys bought 2 door cars. I had more 2 door cars traded in towards for 4 door cars then the other way. Often the addition of kids caused that.

My son has had some hot rides. In his opinion, "When I'm sitting in the driver seat, all I can see is the hood and front fenders. When I smash the gas pedal, and it goes fast, I'm happy. I don't care what the rest of the car looks like, and I don't care what others might thing about my car or truck." For the record, his stuff usually looks pretty good. His 57 Dodge 4 door wagon looks really good, and the modern Hemi moves it pretty good.

At our house we currently have 2 cars and a truck. One car is a 4 door and the hot rod is a 2 door, because that was the body that became available when I was building the ride.

  15. Hey! That 35 Grille doesn't look too bad on a 33-34..

  16. put a louder exhaust on it and run it like hell? never understood the sedan hate but a cool old car is a cool old car to me. two doors, four doors... does it run and does it sound badass? that's the real questions we should be asking. my '57 Ford is a field find sedan, its gonna have duals and glasspacks, but an otherwise stock engine, just like how people did it back in the 60s!

My experience was a bit different. From the time I was probably 7 or 8 in the early 90's, my dad had a 64 Impala SS. Obviously, a 2 door hard top. Going to shows, the drag races, etc. in the 90's to early 2000's there were basically no 4-doors of vintage cars to be seen. Part of the fun in the hobby for me is driving a car that very few others have. So I had lusted after a 62-64 4-door or wagon, because in the early 00's basically nobody was driving them. You saw very few at shows and they stood out because they were different. Now I've had mine 19 years, and it's still cool to me.

I'm much more concerned with how the car was treated over it's life than how many doors it has.

I was never really interested in 4 door cars when I was young. As I got older it got harder to get a 2 door car new so we got 4 doors, but my old cars were always 2 door sedans, hardtop or coupes. Well 5 years ago the car in my Avatar was available and I bought it. It has been in my family since new and my memories of it go back 65 years. Garage kept and never driven in bad weather yes it is a 4 door stick 6 but I love it just the same.

You won't ever find anyone who agrees with you more. My first car was a '65 Polara, ex-CHP car. Just like that one, but with the cop motor and push bars on the front. The CHP folks usually just painted the white front doors black and sold them off, but for whatever reason mine was painted that way ahead of its time matte medium blue metallic. Mine didn't have a floor shifter, rather it was a 413 4 barrel with a 727 and an 8 3/4 rear. Loved that car. We took some 8mm film of it doing burnouts and donuts over by the airport. We jokingly called that roll of film "A boy and his dog."

We should probably be democratic about this and put it to a vote.

About 1964, before the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Dragstrip shut down, there was a tall skinny guy who regularly ran a very impressive black '62 Ford P code 4 door. 390, 4 speed, heavier suspension and all. It was a surplus OKC police unit that they had ordered because "It takes a Ford to catch a Ford" and he was fortunate enough to win the auction. When he talked about the car, he referred to it as "Mama's grocery getter".

I'm not sure what's worse, picturing the second, or looking at the wheels on that car...lol. I had a set of those on my s10 in high school in the 90s.....they were super popular then.

Why don't you throw some trad wheels on that thing?
