Technical Keep or loose the fenders and boards

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by deucepickup32, Mar 26, 2023.

  1. So I am a fan of the highboy look having owned a roadster and am on the fence with the pickup. I really like Bruce’s pickup in Texas and have chatted with him regarding the modifications required for the headlight bar. Posted on a few fb groups I follow and comments were to leave as is. My pickup I know but conversation appreciated. I do have an original hood which is presently on and agree that without it and fenders, just wouldn’t look right.

  5. Never a fan of the shortened beds on a deuce and that’s what makes them unique. That being said, the main reason the 33/34 had the longer wheel base to make it look proportional

I’m a hiboy guy (have 2) but I think the pickup looks better with the fenders and boards. I’d put the hood on too.

Fenders: Yes. Want a highboy? Start a build on a new truck and have 2.

I can't believe this is a serious question! (Is it?) You're lucky to have what you have, something others dream of.:)

Well, the 1/2 tons are on the car chassis, I would suggest that has more to do with it.;)

  21. Had someone in Australia last year that wanted it but after the exchange rate on the dollar, cost to get it there and taxes, it was not feasible.

If you loose the fenders & boards, then you either have to move the rear axle towards the rear, or shorten the bed. Otherwise, there will be too much bed hanging out behind the rear axle. I believe the rear axle should be behind the center length of the bed.

Not a big fan of the hi-boy look. The long bed makes it worse.

Bahhhhhh! Make it a hot rod. Loose the fenders and running boards. Shorten the bed. Chop the top.

  25. Pick ups need fenders!!! Especially with that long bed, the proportions would be uuuugglee!!

IMHO, pickups are hard to make look right without the fenders & hood. They have too many angles going different directions unlike a coupe or roadster. To look right fender less, they need to be chopped & channeled. I would leave the fenders & hood, chop it bout 4", shorten the bed 6 or 8" & lower it a couple of inches all around
