years ago a friend built intakes for his drag vw , yes you can buy weber intakes but he wanted to make his own , he asked me about a source for tapered aluminum tubing for runners , i was walking thru wally world a few days later and spotted kids aluminum baseball bats ,they were cheap (at the time) that's what he ended up using, turned out slick ,the IDA's were opened up and had 51.5 mm throttle plates ,

  13. The intake for the Skinner head is progressing nicely. We worked on the plenum top today along with priming the bedrails on the 640.

  16. Looking at the live camera on the salt flats and it looks like it snowed on the mountain again this morning.
Still has water covering the salt as far as you can see on the video.

We have 4 months and wind coming… no worries yet. I’m completing the rear brake maintenance on our roadster so I can safely load and unload it from the trailer and we will be ready to load up..
Glad to see the parts arrived safely I hope they are all good and usable. Great progress on the intake system. JD

Why do you need burst panels? Is there going to be more than 1 atmosphere inside that new intake?!

  23. OK for those who are asking about the burst panel addition on the intake. It is being added for possable future use as we intend to use this engine for racing other venues that alow power adders. Such as drag racing. Once the intake is finished and powder coated I do not want to go back and weld in a burst panel and mess up the powder coat. Maybe never used but it will be there if we wanted it. Hope this answers questions about why I'm doing this.

Exactly what I thought, there’s so many possibilities like valve or spring failure, valve float or hanging at high rpm’s or ignition system incorrectly firing cylinder at wrong time, etc. Why not take a little extra time to protect a sheet metal intake and maybe ~ $1500 of carburetors from a backfire.

  25. Backfire is a big concern when you have this much cost in the intake system especially with power adders. Precautionary
Measure in advance is worth the extra time and effort.

  26. OK enough on the 302 build.
Let's get back to our next trip to the Arkansas standing mile with the 262 ford engine. We will be leaving Virginia on May 3rd in the evening heading to Arkansas. Arriving around mid morning for tech inspection.
Racing on Friday and Saturday and heading home early Sunday morning.
We will be posting this adventure as it unfolds so look for our post.
Thank you all for following the Virginia H.A.M.B. Special story.
