Art & Inspiration You ever get burnt out from a project?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rusty rocket, Apr 1, 2023.

  1. When I feel the burn-out I take in a car show, hit a cruise night or hang out with my car buddies. But, by far is to actually go for a ride in somebody's hot rod. That rekindles the interest for me every time.

Found my 1930 Roadster body in 1962, sold it in 1976, bought it back 25 years later, still an active but slow project. :)

On almost every car build I've ever done there's a point where I get frustrated, or irritated, and have to step away for awhile. Can't say it's the same as getting burnt out, but it does no good to keep pushing forward if things aren't going well.
I am always happy to be building anything for myself, but have had people I was building for that made me tired of the project.
Usually on my own builds a day is all I need before I'm anxious to get back to it. But on somebody else's car I've told them I'm taking a break of a week or two, just to clear my head, and hopefully want to get back to it.

That’s why I have multiple hobbies. I love keeping a nice reel mowed lawn. I mow, clean up and spray herbicide, pre-em and fertilizer for people on the side. It funds my car hobby and puts money in my pocket. When I feel burned out with one then I focus on the other for a bit. Enjoy your dad while you have him. My dads alive but his priorities changed over the last 10 years. His homies and dope come first anymore. F74811FD-0398-4EA0-81DD-53982A640429.jpeg EE957DC5-BF1D-466C-98A4-93C87D4AA018.jpeg

Cars don't burn me out, they are what keeps me young. I'll be 28 on my next birthday and I feel like I got at least another 10 in me.

I've been lucky and haven't suffered from burnout....I do have other "stuff" to do (and working in the yard cleaning up from winter will be coming up soon here in SW Iowa.) I am closer to 80 than 75...I started the Studebaker when I was 72 and worried (not a lot:) that I'd croak and my wife would have to sell a pile of parts. That car is done and now I'm on a 27 T Roadster....chassis is done.. new engine needs to be fired...I've learned how to cut doors in a 25 plus year old glass body.....I want to drive this car THIS year, This summer...so...not burn out yet:)

  8. Get that one you always wanted and let the passion for it move you forward. Hard to move forward on lame stuff.

My neighbor keeps his lawn like a putting green and when the other neighbors get together in the summer to have a drink or five we often joke that when he dies the only regret he will have about his life is he wished he could have more time on his lawn.

He probably means its the next anniversary of his 28th birthday.
My dad always told people he quit having birthdays at 39. After that he was just going to celebrate the anniversary of his 39th birthday. He managed to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of his 39th birthday the year he passed, several years ago. He always laughed when he was telling people he was celebrating more anniversaries then the age he quit counting. Maybe you had to know dad...

I never gave up, but there were times that I turned off the shop lights and walked away. When it stops being fun, it's time for a break...

When i get burnt out its usually just because im not accomplishing any milestones on a rig. Just doing the little tedious stuff....gotta tackle and finish some milestones to keep it rolling. The tedious little details will grind you down

That's why I have a shop with lots of non major projects.......sadly my patients has shortened considerably over the years and I get bored easily. Burnt out with one, go get a bite to eat and a beverage, come back later, refocus on a different one.
It's enjoyment / no pressure, relax.

The key to the passion and longevity is all my old cars/trucks run and drive so when a project burnt out happens that makes it easier to go for a drive to feed the sights, smells and sounds of youth.

I won't do a major non running - driving car/ truck anymore as I know I won't see it through nor the HD equipment to do so.

You're still waiting on that radiator yeah? At the very least you can take a break while the radiator takes its time to get here.

  18. Have you ever been burnt out on a project? That is the question. Burned out, no, flat out stalled, yes. Bought a 49 Lincoln twenty years ago thinking I was gonna build me a custom, wrong ( incorrect that is) darn thing sat still all that time and I ended up selling it for $1k a few weeks back. I am now happy.
