Technical What are you working on?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Lloyd's paint & glass, Jul 18, 2022.

  1. Little Truckdoctor and I have decided to replace the 216 in our 1950 3100 with a 1964 Chevy 230 and an SM326 transmission. We wanted to keep the 3 on the tree (call us crazy) and this seems like the easiest route. I’m really looking forward to hot rodding a Chevy six. The rear axle (as of now) will be a Ford 8.8 with 3.45’s and a Traction Lok. I’m not looking for a screaming power house, but a nice, smooth, and reliable cruiser. One of will do a build thread on it. Eventually, it will get front disc brakes and dropped springs.

  2. I got the domed glass lense epoxed in my homemade gas cap, didn't make to much of a mess of it

polished a backer to fit under the dome

got new taller lug nuts in and on

Testing ideas for what I want to put under the glass, I've got a good one I can't show yet lol

And then I did a little daydreaming in the 57, looking down the spear listening to Green Onions I imagined of cruising on a warm evening to nowhere

I've used quite a few 230's and 250's in my stuff, I love those engines, hard to beat em.

  6. You know I made an "avatar" album for everyone's viewing pleasure wink wink
The 57 was a nice solid unmolested short bed big window I found abot 2600 miles away, took a gamble and had it shipped sight unseen since it was exactly what I was looking for.
I have a build thread on it, just waiting it's turn to really get busy on it but I've put a 9 inch in it, setup sbc and th400, disc brake swap, lowered and collected a lot of parts.

Finished the transmission swap. Test drive was great, car runs so much better now. Trying to figure out what to put in the bed floor. Picked up 2 pieces of aluminum diamond plate (stole them from a decommissioned ladder truck at work) but they aren't big enough. Stuck one on the inside of the tailgate though. Still gotta plumb a fill pipe up to the fuel door on the quarter panel. 20230411_190109.jpg

So......Since it seems like most of the die hard guys follow this and I really don't want to start a new thread on the issue let me toss this out there.. My Vette has a M21 trans with a Mcleod dual friction diaphram clutch, not dual disc but dual friction. I have noticed when rolling to a stop in first gear with my foot mashed down on the clutch it feels like the clutch suddenly starts to engage, not fully but you can feel it. I pop it into neutral and and come to a stop and then put it back into gear with my foot on the clutch and its not an issue, which leads me to believe that with the input shaft spinning the disc on coast down is causing an issue. Never experienced this before in 45 years of doing this shit. Ideas? It also doesn't do it every time.

Are you running a hydraulic clutch or manual linkage? And is there any resistance at idle when you put it in gear?

Manual factory linkage and no problem putting in gear.

I thought about that but since the input is all locked up in the first gear position there is no slippage involved .

  20. Thanks Lloyd!! I’ve had one 250 over the years and it was tough as nails! I spent some time tonight on Speedway’s website and picked out a cam, intake, carb, and header. The Offy intake is $600! We will certainly rebuild the engine, but the hot rod parts might have to wait a little. Besides, a stock 230 still makes more power than a worn out 216!!

I wouldn't think so but maybe? More like the disc spinning on coast down is being forced either forward or backwards into either the flywheel or pressure plate?

  25. Make sure the splines on the input shaft are clean, the disc needs to be able to move freely on it.
