does anyone know where to currently purchase 5x5.5" to wide 5 bolt pattern adapter plates (flush on back sids)? Speedway doesn't make wide 5 adapters for the early ford bolt pattern (maybe because lots of people with early ford just switch out the brake hubs. I have a ford 9" rear end and just want to use adapter plates. Highway 101 used to make them, but hasn't had any in at least 1.5 years. A1 and "racing in the dirt" versions both press the studs in form the back and they are not flush to the back side.

If anyone has an unused pair laying around, please let me know.

    Thanks!

Yuppers as the man down the road said, they normally have 5/8 studs in those dirt track wide five adapters .

If the studs are to big have them tuned down and threaded or make new ones that step down .

IIRC on another thread someone had a part number for Dorman 1/2" studs that had a larger shoulder that could be used to replace the 5/8" studs on the adapter. But as usual I could be mistaken.

I bought 20 bolts from NAPA a few years back that had splines that easily measured 5/8 ". They had standard threads, 1/2"x20.

I did that for several customers that run Wide-5's, so they can get their tires mounted and balanced.

I will see if I can find the stud part number.

Speedways are also 5/8 studs. The stock Ford wide five will fit right on a 5/8 stud.

Co**** 5/8" lug nuts have a 45° taper.

Conventional automobile ones have a 60° taper.

@gimpyshotrods is right. We use the 5/8" studs on our circle track racers and the nut seat taper is different.

As linecaster mentioned, I too have used the Speedway adapters & they indeed are 5/8" studs but the Ford rims will fit provided you don't mind the larger nuts..

Guess one could chuck their nuts up in a lathe and cut the 60 degree taper. Ow, that hurts to even type that!

It looks like I put threaded inserts in these, and then put in threaded 1/2" studs.

I cannot find a wheel stud order ***ociated with any of the projects where I issues these to customers on delivery of their vehicle.

A1 and "racing in the dirt" versions both press the studs in form the back and they are not flush to the back side. So when bolting to a drum, you would need a spacer or modify your drums. Fingers crossed highway101 will start making them again.

This has been an obsessive point with me, how to balance my wide-5s. Can I ***ume you never tried a front drum degreased, no bearings, put on the balancer spindle? Was wondering if I could pull that off but tire stores don't seem as cooperative as they used to be. I don't even know if that would work.

It might work, and there are even two-piece hubs/drums. Either way, the hub or hub/drum combo would need to be zero-balanced first, or any imbalance would be compensated on the wheel, until it is removed and put on the car.

I use the aluminum ones because they have little m*** to disturb balance.

Dorman 610-449 has a 5/8 shank and 1/2-20 stud that's 1-1/2 inches long. The original application is Jeep. The box from Dorman lists the OE Jeep number as 6036482AA. I bought them to put in a Speedway adaptor so I can get Ford wide fives balanced on a typical tire store wheel balancer.

Highway 101 Rod and Custom used to offer them but not currently. He's here on the HAMB @55willys Maybe if there is enough demand they might make another production run?

Is there a decent machine shop near you?

You can have a set reworked, they same way that I reworked ones for my customers.

Get an aluminum set from a supplier. Knock out the 5/8" co**** studs.

Drill out and tap the holes for threaded inserts. Install the inserts.

    Screw in 1/2-NF studs.

Flycut any excess on the back.

Stake the back edges of the inserts and studs so they don't turn out.

    Go have fun.

    The parts that I used:

    Adapters of your choice.

    5/8"-18 to 1/2"-20 stepped wheel stud: https://www.speedwaymotors.com/1-2-Inch-Studs-for-Speedway-Grand-National-Hubs,103779.html

    Threaded inserts 7/8"-9 to 5/8"-18: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/t...ystem-of-measurement~inch/thread-size~5-8-18/

If you can find worthwhile 1/2"-20 non-stepped studs, you can use a threaded insert that uses those: https://www.mcmaster.com/90248A086/

I like the stepped ones because they have an allen key hole in the end, so I can torque them against the shoulder that they have. Once staked on the backside, they are not going anywhere.

@gimpyshotrods , I appreciate all the information but I'm a little hesitant when it comes to choosing the wide 5 adapters. Is there one that you prefer and if so, why?

Is there a reason not to have a shop relocate the holes and use a standard 1/2 splined stud?

I use the ones from A1 Racing. They are the gold ones that I pictured above.

They are a full disc, so theoretically more strength.

    https://www.a1racing.com/A1_Racing_Products_Wide_5_Wheel_Adapters.aspx

They have the most choices of any supplier that I have seen, too.
