What came first...The Hotrod or Race Car

This is a NA powered Racer with just a bit of Hotrod Attitude...

The Car to the right reminds me of Stu Hilborn's Racer...later in period though perhaps an influence...

This would be like being in WW2 aircraft nose forward...must have been a noisy monster...

Grilles open and a small window on each side...

This as made several appearances here over the years...still amazing...

  9. That looks like Buzz Sawyer's coupe that was around in the mid 1950's. I saw it at Half
    Moon Bay Dragstrip in 1956-1957.

Nick, in an interesting way there are no pics of the back of Buzz's T. I'm thinking it was before Buzz owned it...that coupe in the b&w pic has a whole wall full of Louvers from the lower trunk right up to the roof and no back window...and looks to be in primer...

  13. When I saw the "T" coupe it was painted a dark purple, and had a 1932 DeSoto grill.

If you double the length of the engine and set the radiator shell that far forward you need to stretch the wheel base and add length to the car to keep proportions in check. In this case can the bed be turned around and a '40s - '50s Borg Warner OD trans be fitted to move the rear wheels back? A Chevy six can be fitted into an early Ford but when you poke the front end out too far it looks like there was no plan.

The shot from above shows a balance from front to back and it looks as if he definitely extended the frame forward...I think leaving the fullsize box helps balance it out...

He has a rad in there now and has had it fired up...

You are certainly correct that shoehorning an extended engine into many candidates is a challenge to the Hotrod designer...but you know looks don't win the race...remember those A Roadsters, there were 2 that were on Packard chassis...man did they look challenged in the balance department...it was roadworthy too...sometimes quirky grows on you...

@bobbytnm any recent pics of it...I know you are in the process of connecting the driveshaft...

Stogy, You know I'm an inline guy so maybe I am just touchy about adding the necessary length to the front especially suicide front ends. It can make a rod look like a slingshot dragster. It is easy to make them toooooo long in the front. Basic rule "wheels & stance" if you blow that it will never look right. Yes keeping the full length bed helps but only extending the front of the wheel base doesn't. Just me I guess.

Just went through the whole thread. Nice work, Great build but the front is too long.

Did you see the back...maybe there was a window behind those louvers...and what we see was how Rudy had it Buzz was 2nd owner...that is a beauty...in both and the satin version

Move the 8 back into the cowl...notch the firewall...modding the wheelbase...that may or could be in V2...I think about variations of my Coupe...

  19. That is not the Heredia/Sawyer T. It is chopped much more, looks to be mid engined as there is exhaust exiting through the door, as well as the louvers.

Yes pipes out the side I did see that...I wish there were more shots of that coupe spurring this conversation...it truly fulfills the Nasty Drag Coupe/Hotrod image...Nick was fortunate to have seen the Buzz T in the Heyday...perhaps you did too...apparently it's still in storage...

From my point of view seeing the pics and what is known today is still a trip back to a great time in Hotrod...

  21. Yes, I was fortunate to see the Buzz T in it's day. I was able to see a lot of hot rods and custom cars when I lived in California 1956-1958. I didn't realize then what an impression they made on me. I am now 82 years old, and still have my roadster which I will hopefully be taking out early next month. I still subscribe to Hot Rod Magazine. I started subscribing in December 1956, and have continued to do so, 67 years, never missing an issue. Not many people can match that .

I have to settle for going back in time and living vintage Hotrod in inspiration as I wasn't even conceived when you were enjoying the real deal...I still consider myself extremely fortunate to experience it belated...there is a lifetime of pre 66 Hotrod Custom to celebrate as we still do on top of new builds celebrating that style that was then...

...this Hotrod was shared by @A Boner and minus the turtle deck sure makes it stand out in a bit of an odd way...it also exposes some clever exhaust routing and other details...I wonder if that was the intended look...perhaps that shell ended up on the Graffiti Coupe as it sure has a similar height...sure was a nice Hotrod and on a sidenote there's one of those often maligned Sport Coupes and a Hotrod at that...awesome...
