Moved the car from my place, over to Norm's shop. The goal is to have this thing ready for paint, by the end of the year. Being inside definitely, makes that doable. I never knew tow truck beds, folded like that.
We've decided to go about things differently, concerning the grille shell. I'm going to make the two upper sides, out of one piece. A lot of visualisation today, on Norm's roadster and the 50Merc. I got the go ahead to make flush mount skirts, for the Mercury, instead of trying to make the others fit.
There'll be a aluminum tonneau cover, over the bed. It'll require a cover to clear the gas tanks, vent and block off fitting. I was able to make this out of all scrap pieces.
I'm getting good.. at making things that don't fit, the first time around. But with that, I'm going to change the design. Norm's welds on the right, mine are on the left. Excuse that funky yellow shadow on Norm's part.
Norm asked me to put some time into this piece for his roadster, when I came to a stopping point on the 50Merc. It'll attach to the tonneau cover and hide the fittings on the tank. The first one I made, didn't fit. So I started over, and changed the design to resemble the 26-7 turtle deck. Not sure I like how it curls up and wonder if I shouldn't have done it without. Norm likes it, so we'll see, I suppose
I had to do a little more welding, filling in the low spots. Then some finishing work to make it appear like I might know what I'm doing..
Norm has been emphasizing, I need to reduce the size of my tacks. I find it easier, not using filler rod, when doing so. You can see where the tacks are, when I use filler rod. No bueno for gas tanks, etc..

The lens gets fogged up in my welding helmet, at these temps. So welding is out. Ran the last piece thru the round over dies. When it warms up an I regain some dexterity in my hands, I'll weld things together. So I put in some time finishing, the rear vent cover.
Originally, the grille surround was to be made from two separate pieces. I wanted to finish the weld on the practice piece
This is the 61 Bubbletop I replaced the qtrs on, painted the underside, exhaust thru the rockers an installed the headliner. After many issues with the COMP cam and lifters, the 396/M22 is finally on the road.
Flipping thru past photos and these caught my attention. These are two of my favorite, landspeed roadsters.
