Doing some research for something else and came across this newspaper clipping from the Ottawa Citizen in 1998:
Interesting commentary on this place many of us call home... I didn't know we were such a small group.
I was curious, so I went to look at historical site ****ytics. In 1998, we averaged about 168,000 page views per month. That was actually quite a bit back then. I was paying around $1,000 a month to host that traffic. I was 22 years old and in grad school. I sold my shoebox to pay for the server bills that year.... in advanced to get a 10% discount. Today, we average somewhere around 10 million page views per month depending on the time of the year... And our server bills are quite a bit more expensive. It's hard to say how much more because of all the different sites I host on the five servers, but if I had to guesstimate, TJJ prolly uses around $3500 a month in bandwidth... Been able to hang on to my shoebox this time though... Crazy how much cheaper bandwidth is now...
Yeah, being a Canadian Newspaper, made me wonder if the dairy products company was making cylinder heads up north.
Not allowing politics in our current day and age seems pretty politically incorrect from my perspective. My old man hammered something home to me early and often when I was a kid - don't ****ing follow people - especially anyone with perceived power. I hold that idea very closely... and that's all I have to say about that.
1000 a month in 1998 would be close to 1900-2000 now because of inflation, meaning bandwith has gotten about... a lot cheaper, thats a really big ratio difference. 168:1 vs 2857:1 for monetary comparison. thats people per dollar.
That author has to be a full-blown Karen (or Janet) by now... But, it is pretty neat press, none-the-less.
As I read this article, I began to wonder how I missed the ******? Then I saw it was a 1998 article! But, I agree with the rest of it. The iron fisted editor and moderators are what keep this forum what it is…….even if I have been socked a time or two! Lol Bones
Interesting article. Being such as "small" site, I wonder how someone in Ottawa even knew about it. I didn't discover the JJ until much later, Sept 2005 ( still grit my teeth about being a FNG)!
Ryan, you started something about 25 years ago. You can be damned proud of what you started. I got my br*** alliance tag in yesterday's mail. I will proudly display the tag on my roadster. Thanks for all that you have done and continue to do. I, for one, appreciate all that you have done, and continue to do.
How cool is that article? I don’t think (when I used to get the paper) I ever read an article about a website. Many references and discussions on TV shows is all I recall.
A little side note. Ottawa (the capital of Canada), my old stomping grounds for many years. One son lives there still and one son goes to University there.
