Hello, At the time period of the photo, this was unincorporated Orange County property. The city of Huntington Beach tried to capture it to expand its city border as it comes right to the end of this community at Warner Avenue and the Bolsa Chica State Beach confines. In the early days, the long space of beach South was called “Tin Can Beach.” That city battled the city of Seal Beach to see who would be able to expand their borders. Seal Beach won and they claimed the unincorporated Northern Surfside Community as part of Seal Beach, including shops and beachfront homes. Huntington Beach won the Southern portion of the beachfront that was formally called Sunset Beach. Today, the residents still call their community Sunset Beach, despite the government names. It is hard to change history since the early 1900s. Jnaki So, the photo shows the old Sunset Beach Post Office with the flag. Since there is no postman to deliver mail along the beachfront, all residents of Sunset Beach stop at the post office. Residents of the Northern community of Surfside/Seal Beach have their own post office inside of the gated community. Sunset Beach PCH Post Office today… on the left side. The Huntington Harbour Bay waters are on the right. This spot is probably the lowest in elevation in the whole area. When the "King" tides come in every so often, the bay waters overflow onto PCH and add in some big storm waves, there is a meeting of salt water to drive through, going in either direction. Then as it stands, the original posted photo is of Sunset Beach (Huntington Beach) and not Seal Beach. Surfside began in 1929 and is part of Seal Beach. Surfside begins at the tall wooden water tower condo at the northern end of the two communities. Sunset Beach began in 1904 and is now a part of Huntington Beach… NOTE: Despite what the maps and articles about the two cities' names, the residents still call their homes for their original names, Surfside Colony at the Northern end and Sunset Beach at the Southern end. History dies hard...
Standard service station on Manchester Road, on the original 66 alignment, Rock Hill in suburban St. Louis in 1962. They appear to be having a grand opening giving out free Pepsi and hot dogs and triple Eagle Stamps. This station is still there, branded as BP.
