He did make it out ok, one of three fuelers to go over at the '65 Smokers meet, Nando Haas and Paul Sutherland also rolled at the '65 meet.

. . . and was failing them -- same thing? And how did it get fixed, please, if you know.

Ouch, they cut the windshield off a low production 1932 Cabriolet.

Chuck worked at Logghe Stamping for a time and built my Last Logghe Altered while there. I hired Al Bergler to do the tin work too. Lots of great times with that car - and a few scary moments along the way. Still own it and race it at select nostalgia events.

  5. Didn't Billy Lynch have a top fuel car later ?

  6. He ran Top Gas throughout the late 60's and occasionally did run Mike Sforza's Top Fuel motor in his car...one event at Sanford Maine on July 9th, 1967 he went in running gas and left running fuel...and winning the event.

He late ran a big show T/F car with Jack Ostrander driving and then later by Al Segrini.
That's Billy with his back to the camera.

  7. It's nice that you mention Mike Sforza. When I lived in Connecticut I used to go to the Long Island Street Rod club swap meet. I got to speak with Mike on a few occasions. He was a typical New Yorker, brown gabardine pants, loud New York accent, but a good guy to know. I bought some Sun Tachometers from him at one of the swap meets.

  8. Sadly he recently passed after a short stay at a nursing home...Billy always talked highly of Mike.

Gotta be FBI. I'm sure that drag racing was thoroughly investigated by a house committee on Un-American activity back then. Someone had to gather intel on those renegades.

  14. The Frenchtown Flyer was probably referring to the guy standing by the base of the tower.

    While he probably was...he wasn't specific...was he ?
He just asked the question about being well dressed.
    Ronda always was.

Yes, I was referring to the gent standing near the tower, who stood out from the rest of any drag strip crowd I'd seen. He seemed to be looking intently at the Gas Ronda car so that would explain it. Thank you.

  21. Just a wisp of tire smoke and carrying the front wheels thru the beams! I'm suspecting that's about the best launch you could hope for, isn't it?

Last year, Billy told me about Mike turning 90, buying a new Corvette, and driving it to Denver and back. Just knocking off another bucket list item!

Only if you don't red light by pulling the front tires out of the beams. BTDT

  25. That's why I figured that the "wisp of smoke" was a good sign.

  26. Are we really seeing the tire pulling that far away from the bead?!

Mostly though I'm curious about how they had to rig things up to even get that photo.
