Hi, Just found my Dad's original Duster's Car Plaque from Roswell, NM, he was a member form around 1955 -1957. Curious to see if there is any information out there about the club and it's members. I remember going to the drags there when I was about 5 years old. Thanks in advance for any replies. Sam
I have this photo on our website that was sent to me by Joann Davis in 2004 ..... I don't remember for sure if it belonged to a family member but believe that was the case. Later on I was contacted by someone looking for info about this club they were starting up in Yuma, AZ. They sent me a photo of the plaque they had made ..... Perhaps you could do a search on the Internet to see if you could contact them.
Contact Milton, user name "Duster", he is an original member of the Dusters WAFB. I'm sure he will be happy to hear from you!
I'm still hanging in here and got a message that there had been another post on this thread. Here are a couple of Dusters plaques that I have on my website ... Not sure why the photos are gone but they may have been on an old website.
A lot of military bases had car clubs. I just found out about a club called the Stratorods comprised of airmen at March AF Base in what was called the Sunnymead area of the Inland Empire in CA. They built a B/MR in the base hobby shop and raced it at the National Drags in Detroit in 1959. Anyone heard of this club?
This page on my website has some of the Military Club plaques shown. Notice that WAFB had two clubs on their base ... MILITARY CLUBS WITH PLAQUES
While doing research into car clubs of New Mexico, I learned that the Dusters were formed in the late fifties and were active until the base closed in 1967. Initially only Air Force personnel were allowed into the club. One source said that the officers usually had sports cars, while the NCO's had hot rods. Club members held monthly drag races on one of the many runways on the base. The races drew entries from all over New Mexico and west Texas. The club president and some if the members ran a B Modified sports car and held the NHRA B/SP national record for a couple of years. After the base closed, a couple of locals tried to keep the club going but eventually most lost interest and the club folded.
