I didn't start drag racing till I was 54 and now at 66 I still wear the grin each time I do a run. I think I'm up to 660 runs since I started.

Don't want to get too far astray here, but that brought back a flood of 1980s memories, #1, Chargin' Charlie, B4 Boggs, #71 Delmas Conley, and the the boys from a little further South, like Purvis and the guy with the B&D Boiler car, Smith? Oh well, get the 454 done, so you can break some stuff ;)

Looks like a lot of fun. I raced back in the day when you ran in the class your car got put in by weight and advertised hp and I ended up in G stock running a 14.25 bone stock car and at least once having t0 run against a 62 Chevy wagon with a 409 4 speed with a back window covered with national record holder stickers and NHRA class win stickers. He ran 12.6 something.

The local 1/4 mile track is 13.5 miles from the house and some times you can hear the big boys run from the house. the Little 1/8 mile track is 116 miles away but might be more fun for a low buck bracket racing rig.

I guess you heard that little Jack died? I also did a lot of paint work for Mike Francis, which was Steve's dad.

Every damn street car around here was running a canted valve engine out of somebody's late model at one point it seemed lmao! I graduated with little Jack, we'd hang around the race/ machine shop and get the cast off speed parts lol.

I bet. We paid $40 just to watch. o_O I should have asked what it was to actually race. I could have seen what my O/T car would have done. :D

But then I'd be stuck looking at it sitting in the yard, I like driving it too much to ruin it :p I'll fix it with the big block torque

It's pretty obvious that I've gotta change the 10 bolt when I put the big block in lol. I'm already looking for a 9" Ford. Then I could have 2 center sections to swap out!

275-60 street tires. I drove the car to the track, ran it through 3 times, and drove it back home lol. No worries on hooking up Billy, maybe on some oil, on a hill, with a line lock, and the front wheels chocked :D

    That will be way fun!

Getting the 1/8th sorted will help a ton. I'm sure we could help you spend some money, too... hahaha.

I once had a 64 or 65 Elcamino? Honestly I never liked it, tried to sell it twice eventually took it to a car lot & traded it in on a jeep CJ5.

That car had the best running 283/4spd I ever owned.
It was a 2brl carb, no working choke .... turn the key & it would start instantly. A choke would only be in the way. Summer or winter, made no difference.
To spin the tires was a joke, it would do it all day long.

Possible a decent 2 barrel carb would improve your 60 ft time. Improving your total ET.
Then build up from there to a 4 barrel?

Or possibly your 4 barrel secondaries are kicking in too soon drowning you with excess fuel?
Manual linkage or vacuum, that can be adjusted.

Badass! The slowest car on the track is faster than the guy that didnt come and race!

  25. Just found this, very cool! Nothing better than going down the track and driving it home with nothing broken. As far as the time slips, now I realize your comment back when I said my wagon wasn’t fast.
I’m betting that you will see them improve every trip even before you put in the BB.

I don’t know about the power pack heads (sue me) but seems after the surfacing you should have a decent CR. Cam seems good for a 283.
Seems it would take a lot of grunt to spin 275/60’s with a 283 and a TH350 with a standard converter.
Maybe you need a looser converter to get going better? That cam is larger than grocery getter 350’s, but should be enough to wake up a 283 I’d think? Could it be you’re launching to far below the power band?

Yep, stock converter, was supposed to be a 2400, but it's not. And I'm guess 3600lbs with me. I've gutted a lot. Not even a floor in the bed.

Well ya gotta keep in mind, I didn't build a 283 with the intentions of going racing. I built this with the intentions of replacing the 350 in my wagon that lost oil pressure, but the guy that bought my 57 didn't want the 283, he was putting an LS in it. So the 283 went in the camino, now here we are. Yeah the "power pack" heads are a joke, probably meant something 60 years ago, but what I've been taught right here on the hamb is that a 283 has nothing going for it but compression and rpm. So you have to run the 58cc head with a flat top piston if you want any compression at all, then if you put a big whoop ass camshaft in it, the overlap will destroy your compression. Hence why in running the cam that i am, 114⁰ lobe separation. I'm not in the market to make a drag car, and absolutely not trying to make the 283 "hot", but I do want it to run right. I need all of the 200 horsepower to work in unison lmao! Some guy here dogged me about an electric fan, and when I said the mechanical fan was robbing me of horsepower he made fun of me, probably had a little dick and a fat ugly smelly wife, but that's beside the point lmao, but yes, when you make 200-250 horsepower, they all count!! There's no doubt in my mind that this car will turn a 9 in the 1/8th, just gotta figure out what's going on with it. But yes we're on the same page about power pack heads ;)
