I agree with you. With that front grill assembly Studebaker was well ahead of the other auto manufacturers. IMO they should have stayed with that type of look, and not the bullet nose type.

Beuford “Doc” Shanebrook welder fabricator who designed a roll-top steel roof for a midget car to try and improve driver safety which Shanebrook then tested - twice - by deliberately rolling his car twice to show how good his invention was. This was undeniably risky, but it worked; Shanebrook walked away without injury and the car only had a bit of paintwork damage.

 

With a slightly less radical chop, I would drive the heck out of that thing!

Ol' Drop-It-On-The- Ground . . .

Let me explain -- See the steel caster wheel just in front of the slick? One on each side. The driver controls the casters. They push start the 3-wheeler on the rubber tires, and once it's going the driver lifts the rear end with the casters. They push the car up to the line, the driver revs it up, green light! Drop it on the ground!

(I'm thinking that the engine torque prevents a wheelstand. All I remember is that it left like it was on fire and was cool to watch.)

Sometimes I think the current traditional “scene” looses track of the true how it was back in the day. Most where kinda awkward and quirky. Here is my model a roadster built sometime in the late ‘50,s early ‘60,s. ‘39 windshield leaded on as a poor man’s Duvall, spring in-front ‘40 front end with un-split wishbone, 265 Chevy to ‘39 box, torque tube and Columbia rear.

 

I think the starter is having a laughing fit.

Frank Maratta's 1940 Mercury
1940 Mercury owned and built by Frank Maratta of Hartford, Connecticut. Frank was operating a custom shop named New England Auto Body, and in order to show his abilities and get more customers, he decided to make a wild custom that would gather as much attention as possible. The build started on a 1940 Mercury 4 door convertible sedan, and in the end, less than 25 percent of the original body was left. 2000 hours of metal shaping and leading was spent after work hours, constructing the promotion custom. It featured endless of modifications, such as the hand shaped tapered fins sloping down to a set of 1952 Mercury taillights. The front, dash, doors, trunk were hand shaped and modified. The upholstery was custom built, seats, door panels and dash padding were all 2-tone Naugahyde white and pink to match the exterior.

 

Always one of my favorite "ugly" kustoms...

I was unfortunate to see Maratt's Mystery in person. IMO, the best thing that Frank did was to cut the body up, and scrapped it.

 

At least by leading the windshield area in, it didn't look like an afterthought. It almost looks like it belongs there.
