Technical 700r4 problems, TV cable?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by BillSchmid, May 29, 2023.

  1. The governors on the GM ODs is where you play with shift points. TV cables are NOT adjustable!!! Set properly and leave it alone. Here are some photos of mods I did to the one on the 200R4 tranny we put into my grandson's El Camino. it was shifting too soon ( great for granny's grocery getter) so we modified it for higher shift points. To do that we removed a bias spring and shaved weight off the centrifugal weights so it took longer to shift. Came out great, now tranny works perfectly in the engines power band. Great thing is brand new governors only cost (5 years ago) about 12 bucks so we bought several to play with.

Left is already modified. Right has black lines drawn where weight is removed.

I also removed this bias spring.

A trick suggested by Buick Grand National buffs is to braze a nail in this weight to retain the remaining bias spring. I guess they pop out on hi-power shifts!!

Overdrive is nice, but for shift quality, you can't beat a 350 or 400, that vacuum modulator makes all the difference.

  3. Shifts improve a bunch with TansGo kit and modified governor as above. Grand National Buicks do really well with hopped up 200R4s.

  4. That's because the governor valve is closed and gov. pressure is not making the loop thru it.
If you were to wire the weights in the open position, you drive the car by manually shifting it.
Might get someone back home that way.

The best way to diagnose shift/tv problems is to measure pump pressure. Buy a kit that fits the oil pressure tap on the trans casing. Lots of youtube vids show what measurements to expect.

After getting all sorts of bogus, contradicting info on adjusting the cable on 7004's, I simply ended up more confused than certain how to set it. So I called Art Carr transmissions, and the tech told me how to set the cable. He said to simply let all the tension out of the cable, and then open the throttle wide open. Then pull the cable back until it was tight, and lock it down.
Once I did this, my trans shifted right where it should, and I had full throttle without the cable restricting the carb.

If you get a good 1-2 shift, but slipping when you go to third, no cable adjustment is going to fix it. It needs to come out and be rebuilt.

I have a sbc /700r4 set up . With the quickfuel carb , I used the Trick flow 7004r bracket , Really easy to follow for adjusting . Also the B&M lock up switch ,if I don't want OD .Just if you go with 700r4 rebuild , maybe try this set up .Shifts great , stopped at trans shop ( old drag racer) & asked to check it . Said go to go . Good luck with whatever direction you take , awesome help from everybody !!!

My Quick Fuel carb is the Brawler series, and it is already setup to work with the 700R4 cable with the right ratio. I didn't know this, and bought the adapter for a Holley, only to discover it mounted in the exact same location as the Quick Fuel arm already was. Called their tech line and was told I didn't need the adapter for my QF Brawler carb.

A TH450 or a TH400 sure might shift nice, but not everyone can afford to buy, or has the room to fit a Gear Vendors overdrive behind one, so they can have overdrive, and those nice shifts.
