History Looking back on Hamb history

  1. My "HAMB History" is based on my 14+years as a member.
It's been 14 years because it is an informative, entertaining, interactive site I can relate to.
Something about the knowledge, experience from all skill levels centering on a common passion we all share with this hobby of ours, keeps me coming back.
Thanks fellow members...you/we are what it's all about.

  2. Very well said sir.;):)

  3. Yo, Trent. Remember at BTT50s when we were on the grassy knoll waiting for all HAMBers to arrive. This one kid with jeans, t-shirt and black greasy hair walked past and we fuckin CAPTURED him, thinking he was a HAMBer.
"what's the HAMB?" he asked and we included him in our first HAMB get together. His name was Stevie...haven't heard from him in years but for years he made a great member.

  4. Stevie D? He is still around. Gray hair now tho. We stay in touch on FB. I will see if I can dig out my pics

I first joined back in 1837, looking for help chopping the top on my Conestoga. The HAMB was all a bunch of jerks and pantywaists back then, so I deleted my account.

A blast from the past. I stumbled upon this place when I was starting up our company’s first serious internet connection. Got it online, my first search was “hot rod” and the Jalopy Journal came up. I was a lurker for a few years before finally joining. I even witnessed the day Ryan christened the HAMB. Something like, “here’s your hokey assed message board.” Lots of great characters back then.

The Hamb was indeed quite different back then. Neither better, nor worse than today, it was just a different place in time. It was fun, rude, knowledgeable, full of shit, and an overall nice place to meet good folks.

    Hello,

Being a relatively new guy in 2016 was intimidating. There were a bunch of old threads that were interesting and informative. But, a lot of it was just copy and post, without much thought about real facts or actual experience. Like most forums, it was hearsay to the reader and the more copy/post things were shown, the more someone looked and just realized they could do the same thing. Copy something from the internet and post as if it was their own information.

Some folks accepted it for what it was, facts, but no verification to those facts. Just, I heard it from a cousin, who talked to his neighbor and that is how it was back then and so on… Many people were slightly intimidated that the constant posts were full of unsubstantiated facts, but as the thread moved on, it sure seemed like the person knew what he was saying.

In 2003, we were busy getting our newly purchased last house for us, in order with new paint, some remodeling and new furniture. We were also traveling a lot during the off seasons and liked it more than fighting the crowds during the summer months of good weather. What was a few drops of rain or foggy weather?

Sailing out in the ocean was a major part of our lives. Computer use was not the major use of our time. It was learning to live an easier way and make things simple, as well as adventurous. Although, those cool flip phones were very intriguing with calls made from everywhere, not just from home landlines. Real cameras allowed ways to express our selves and capture moments that one day will bring those memories back to life.

I did find the HAMB early on, but like other sites, it was just rehashing stuff unsubstantiated. Another website was good for information in different classes or topics. But as some of the current HAMB guys were participants, it was good. Until the owner of the site kept putting his posts over others and virtually took over rehashing other’s information that was a downer and a lot of people just quit.

It was fun to contribute facts from our experiences, but the posts from others and the owner just did not make sense other than copying stuff off of the internet and using it as their own experiences. So, I noticed a fast exit and it is still going on with only the owner posting his stuff.

The HAMB was getting better and most posts actually had personal experiences from those early days and substantiated facts were real, not just copied and posted as real life experiences. Don Montgomery, 286ardun, etc.

I did not start until 2016, when I had something to offer in the way of historical facts as seen through a couple of young teens/20 somethings growing up and staying in So Cal during their lives. It was difficult as our granddaughter was born in 2005 and for the next eleven years, it was new parenting 5-6 days a week. We were given the responsibility to look after this walking little person in a new light. So, as our responsibility and school grades came/went by quickly, there were a few moments to start organizing my files for stories.

This is a fun place to read/chuckle at some and understand others. It is a good part of the old style hot rod world as the limits in photos and topics are good centering points. I have always liked to draw and writing was something I learned to do in college. High school was fun and a great learning experience. It allowed me to learn the basics, but expand my horizons. It was a starting point and a long time ago.

We had the experiences after staying in one area for so long. It was a way to learn about our ability to adapt to any situations and how to get along with others... as we have all learned over time. We all consistently heard..."play nice, get along with others, and follow the rules ..."

Up to 1965 traditional is a distinct place as most events changed and so did styles. Those that continue to post 1966 and newer photos get slammed and should realize the limits. It is what makes the HAMB as good as it is. If newer photos are necessary, there are still other websites that don’t care about limits, they just want more copy and paste stuff as facts. YRMV

Junji, I well remember when you jumped into Ryan's History of Los Angeles thread in 2016. Your contributions to that thread were among the best first-hand accounts, fantastic stuff.

  25. My car guy dad died of cancer a week before I got married in 2006. I had lurked here but I really dove in soon thereafter because I needed someplace to ask questions about my newly inherited 38 Chevy. It also helped in the grieving process and helped in healing.

Because of this place I have made lifelong friends and built my first car (The Varmit 40 Ford Sedan) and now had several others. It’s kinda weird, I used to ask lots of questions, and now I’m able to answer some!

I can’t understate how influential the HAMB has been on me over the last 16 years.

  26. I just realized that the **** HAMB is older than I am... It's always been my go-to internet learning source, I've felt like I can trust you guys to give the most correct information out of all the different forums out there. Thanks, all!

It sure moved fast back then, something you wanted to read would be on page 10 in an hour, I liked it better back then, definitely more fun and less ......

  29. I browsed around the HAMB since 2000. Didn't actually join til I met Slddnmatt. Been suspended a few times, even quit once(over some questionable photos) haha. But i've been following ever since. All my friends, i've met here. Many memorable events...
