Picked up a 56 Commander. Tried a search and didn't find any gassers in this body style. To me, it almost looks like a mini 55 Chevy from the front. As it's already in primer, it's got me thinking a "what if". Does anyone have pictures of this body style in gasser trim? Thanks.
In complete form, the front end looks much (but for the dual headlights) like a Checker cab ! The body is pretty stiff with the extra post at the door, so that's good. If the car was a 6 cylinder car originally, the frame was made with thinner material than if the car was originally a V-8 car. So...if the car was a V-8 originally, that's another big plus for strength. You might do some checking on one of the Stude sites, but I believe the 54 "sedan" front end is a bolt-on to that body/frame. That will make it a much nicer looking car overall, no matter what type car you build it into. Try here for that answer - https://forum.studebakerdriversclub.com/ Have fun. Mike
I found these pics on an old Barn Finds listing-not my car. I like '56 Studes. The basics are there-it has that look. It would be unique! The question is which engine?
I agree, the 58's most defiantly look like a Checker. Thank you for the link, I joined that group the other day.
Look at that President with all that extra bling!! LOL As mine did not come with any of the mechanicals, and I have my fair share of Ford 289s and T5s in the shop....... I'm currently thinking of throwing one of each in and I have an 8.8 out of an explorer doing nothing, so that may go underneath it as well. Not factory stuff, but it's what I have. LOL
years ago a friend built a 55 Stude...he had small block Ford stuff too, so he used that, and gave the car a Bonneville theme. There's more to life than Gassers, you know
I'll look into the Bonneville look. I'm not all about the gasser look. Just that initial vibe I got looking at it from the front made me think of Two Lane Blacktop. Realistically it will become a fun little driver/hot rod.
Studes are fun. Just as a warning they do tend to multiply. We went from 0 to 2 last year in very short order. So far have resisted the urge to drag more of them home. There are a couple parts cars I'm looking at though... Anyways, I've never paid attention to the sedans, but it does have "the look" to it. Looks like someone already de-chromed it for you. Triple black, lowered down a bit with something mean under the hood would be cool.
