Screwing around with some stuff here... Not entirely accurate by any means, but it has helped me with a couple things in terms of the wheels base and interferences.

There is one on here complete with water pump, manifold, etc... Forget who did it. Do a search for CAD. I think it might come up. The guy who started it is on here quite a bit...

this is great. I dont think people fully realize all the possibilities hear. 3D models can also yield 2d dwg files, the dwg files can be used to make brackets, plates, spring perches etc on the waterjet/CNC machine.
The 3d models can also be on the cnc and you can make molds for stuff like for fibergl***/vacuum forming etc.
A downloadable library for members would be awesome! Instead of trying to email everything to everyone that asks.
I will submit anything i come across too!

I use SolidWorks too. No hot rod parts specifically, but I do plan to design a disc brake conversion for my pickup once I can get some accurate measurements.

    (Nice avatar, btw. ;) )

like rdaugird asked: are you proficient in drafting or engineering? or at least in reading blueprints? i've been doing autocad for about 15 years now; before that i did design work with pencil/paper. my experience is that if you can't do any drafting on paper then you probably won't be able to draft in cad. but if you can draft on paper and you're reasonably computer literate then you'll prolly do just fine learning cad.

I have a copy of his model in .igs format. PM me and I'll send it to you. I haven't verified it dimensionally, but it appears to be a good model.

  17. I'd say atch is probably right, I started AutoCAD in '89, but had been drafting since I was in jr. high. I wouldn't say you COULDN'T learn AutoCAD, but basic drafting is a plus. Either way, give it a shot, especially if you have access to the program. You can buy a book with a student version(it works the same, but prints"Student Version" on the edges of the page) for around $100 U.S., a bargain, AutoCAD costs thousands of dollars!

Thanks no real background , I am a bodyman by trade also worked in the aircraft field for a while , I do some drawing and can read blueprints . I have started in a RV dealer and we are starting to manufacture .I Have the job of making the fibergl*** caps ,it would be nice to design then on CAD for the customer . I think I will try and get my head around it .

  19. By all means, try it. I draw almost everything I build in the garage on CAD, I love it! I have designed tons of stuff I'll probably never build, and saved a lot of $$$ on materials figuring out things that won't work or will work better. Also great for making patterns, depending on your printer size. We have a printer at work with a 48" roll of paper on it! I don't know if they have Kinko's or any equivilent in Ireland, but they will print CAD files full size, I did that in the past.

I'm not sure what software you are running, but in Solidworks you can import a picture (I forget what format it is) scale it and basically trace the lines.
