Hello all, I am working on a story for Hot Rod Magazine about the McGee Roadster and I am looking for personal stories and unseen (ie. widely published) photographs of this historic car over the years. I know that there are other threads here but I hope to find some new stories and photos as I research this story. What I'm looking for: Personal stories about how you/family member/friend have been influenced or have a memory with this roadster. Photographs of the car in any of its many guises through the years. Any interesting first-hand stories of this roadster. Anything else that may be tangentially relevant to this roadster. Thank you in advance! Tim
I got nothing really, other than, to me the most relevant (read that outstanding) feature on this car is the extended trunk lid, never seen another like it. Why didn't Henry originally do it this way, let's not be realistic either, it should have been. Run with that!
I’m sure you have seen it, and most of these came from the Petersen archive, but this the thread I had made a while back. There are a few pictures in it that aren’t magazine shots. I have a few of them, though not many, that came from ****’s collection. No stories unfortunately…other than I went to the Grand National roadster show a number of years ago and was checking out other stuff around town. Went up to the Nethercutt museum which is mostly restored and br*** era stuff. I walked in the front door of the main building and setting front and center was the McGee roadster. Completely unexpected. I just sat on the floor and stared at it for a while! Got to check it out pretty up close and personal last year in the Petersen ba*****t too. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/the-****-scritchfield-roadster.1256547/
^^^^^This is a great thread. The Peterson Digital Archives also have some pics under Scritchfield's mispelled name of "Scrichfield"......if you haven't already found them. https://archive.petersen.org/pages/search.php
You might try talking with Greg Sharp. I believe he drove the car at Bonneville for Scritchfield. If you don't know Greg, He was a long time LA Roadster club member, & retired a while from his position at the NHRA Museum.
The 2 pics that I have from 1966 along with my comments are posted in the thread that @Anderson posted the link for in post #3 above. The pics were taken in Scritch's driveway in Glendale and would have been Nov or Dec '66. They are color slides and the quality is not real good as my son took them with his point and shoot when I was showing him some of the slides from our 1966 US trip. If you need copies I could get my mate to scan them.
IIRC, the roadster was in M***achusetts for a while. I can't remember the name of the person that owned it at the time. I may be wrong, but I thought that Kirk White bought the roadster about the same time that he bought the Ray Brown roadrter.
Yep. I have this thread bookmarked as reference. Good stuff. Just thought I'd see if there was anything else hiding on the outskirts...
Hello Pete. I am working with Tony Thacker on this and he also mentioned Greg. I believe that they're meeting to talk about this in the next few days.
Sure looks great now! Almost too nice to drive. It sure looked good sitting in front of the Bovard Auditorium last month (75 years after the original shoot). It was an honor to photograph this piece of history.
We traveled many thousands of miles cross country with Scritch & Marian over the street rodding years, & lots of old memories for sure! Scritch ran some tall gears for economy & sounded like high idle at 65 mph. We maintaim weekly emails with each other since he moved to Kona, Hi. Don Thomas ,past president of L.A. Roadsters, now lifetime member.
