I need ***istance please, I am wiring my reverse light on my PU and I need to know where the reverse light switch is on a 46RE transmission. I see a switch near the back of the valve body with three small prongs sticking up in it. Is that it? Is power connected to the center post and the reverse light on one of the outers? Note: I used a NSS on the shifter. I think these Dodge switches are both NSS and Reverse. Any help is appreciated. I guess I can do some probing with a multi meter but I'd accept the short cut if one of you knows off the top of your head.
Probing is work, let me go google it for you. Be right back. I am back, The two outside pins are for the reverse, they connect together when the trans is in reverse. The center pin is for the neutral start, it gets grounded in neutral, and park, for starting.
Yep. And you have to put it in reverse, test, shift to park, test, up and down on the lift, etc. I tried googling and it only frustrated me, I figure when all else fails, HAMB it.
sounds like the NSS that mopars have used since about 1968. I have no idea what a 46RE transmission is, but I could have answered the question anyways?
Billy, I ran downstairs and took a quick pic of my sons new conversion for his truck . The center wire is neutral safety,,,,it’s white with a black tracer . The front and rear wires are backup light,,,,,,they simply complete a circuit . That way which ever way you connect the fitting,,,,,they always complete the circuit. And the center wire is a ground,,,,,no juice into it . The other wires are hot for the light circuit . Tommy
It’s a 727 with OD. The e stands for electronic as the OD is controlled by a shift computer. Not rarely H.A.M.B. friendly. No but I can take one tonight yeah, that looks like it. So I use the out side terminals. I don’t have a pig tail for it. This will help buddy.
Quite frankly Squirrel I did not do enough research prior to purchasing it. A buddy was closing his transmission shop and had this trans on the shelf. I got a good deal on it but the shift computer set me back $300 and change. In retrospect, I could have done better but this is an excellent transmission and should stand the test of time.
If you know what it originally left the factory in I'd hunt down a wiring diagram. Or just flat cheat and slip over on the dark side (moderators, this is to help my buddy) 96' 46RE backup light switch? | DODGE RAM FORUM - Dodge Truck Forums Reverse, Parking circuit | DODGE RAM FORUM (ramforumz.com) My bad thing blocker wouldn't let me pull an alleged 46RE wiring diagram.
Yeah, same issue I was running into on my corp computer. I thought it was the firewalls but for all I know 518 is some **** channel.
These days, you can't do an online search for transmission parts by using the normal "trans" aberration. Oreille's Auto parts has a lot of modern electrical pigtail fittings available. I'm not sure the old park/neutral plug would work on the 46RE, I believe the newer switches are not as wide of pin spacing.
Chrysler transmission numbering = 46RE 4=4 forward gears, 6=torque rating, R=rear wheel drive, E=electronic governed. A 46RH would be the same thing EXCEPT hydraulic governed (old school no electronics) A 47RE would be behind an early ***mins, torque rating of 7. 42RE would be behind a 4.0L Jeep, torque rating of 2. There isn't a conversion of the torque rating to ft/lbs, just a 7 is higher than a 6. Then you get to the newer stuff like a 68RFE that is behind a newer ***mins diesel 6 speed, torque rating of 8, rear wheel drive, Fully Electronic not just electronically governed but all functions electronic controlled. Hope this helps somehow.
Yep, that's it. I didn't get to the switch last night, but I finished wiring taillights, license plate marker and reverse lamp. I'll tackle that switch tonight. I may run past the wrecking yard and grab a pigtail off something. @Spooky you guys have a late model dodge out there that you can have one of the guys cut that pigtail off that reverse switch? See above.
Billy , There are plenty of trucks in the yards,,,,,,,you can get a pigtail from them for only a couple of dollars . It will work just like new ! Tommy
Wrecking yards are closed this afternoon so Amazon to the rescue. It will be on my porch tomorrow! Thanks @notaford1 for the part number.
You went to the Pull A Part and climbed under an old truck and had to get dirty ,,,,,lol . I’m not blaming you though,,,,,,you have gotten plenty dirty on this build . Tommy
Seriously, how do they have stuff on my porch in 24 hours on a weekend? I can't wait for drone delivery!
