I like writing a good story for readers. I also like reading a good story. Good story man. You are just on the other side of the mountains. from me. Lot of similarities. Dad was from North Dakota. Moved here about 70 years ago. Brought his car he owned a lifetime with him.
If you haven't seen it watch the movie Hot Rod filmed around 1979. The car racing one not the stupid kid one. Rarely ever seen on TV.
B movie like California Kid, Macon County Line, Last American Hero. But it's got a cool Willys and some neat street racing. Might give you some extra fodder for an idea.

Inspiration for both the previous, and current, owners?

Keep that '39 front end, confuse the uninformed and anger the purists.

  7. Wow ... just found the place on Google Maps, talk about out in the middle of nowhere!!! Would love to hear how you connected with the owner :)

Those Willys are hard to come by, especially coupes. A barn find 40 coupe is all but impossible. They had low production numbers and most of them are already accounted for. Well done sir. Good on you.

  20. Love the Willys. And that Falcon is no slouch either!

  21. Use the '39 front sheet metal. The '39's are kind of special. Jack Merkel oldest x.JPG

As Paul Harvey always said "and now for the rest of the story" How did you get wind of a car up in the mountains stored for 50 some years?

Agreed. Seeing as this '39 front end has been with the car for over half a century.. I'm leaning towards keeping it together with the car and using it. Here's some photos I found of '39 Willys (Overlands) being raced back in the day, including some more photos of the championship winning Jack Merkel '39 coupe.

  24. The 39 shark nose is the best looking frontend to use. Very hard to find. Use it and enjoy!

Please keep that’39 front on! Truly sets it apart.

I have wanted a. Willys since I was 17. A school chum’s father had a ‘41 out on the old homestead that I chased for decades starting in my teens. That was a long time ago. Old dude finally told me he would whoop my ass if I asked about it again. I had not doubt that he could. lol. Rest in peace Bill.

So, that was one that got away.

So, I will be following this and living vicariously, so please humor me. lol

The last picture of the maroon willys and 6 people in it are from Missouri. Helmuth & Ortega race team. They were out of St. Louis Missouri and quite successful. All the big name racers from all over the country would congregate at Wayne Ortega house and race shop.

  30. SRM did a great feature on Wayne in the late 80s or 90s? He actually drove one of his Willys year round with "bull bars" welded up all the way round to protect the sheetmetal.
