Projects 1928 model A frame- now what

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by daylatedollarshort, Jun 16, 2023.

  1. So thanks to the graciousness of a friend I have this early 28 rpu frame, and the truck now on a 30 frame. What is the right thing to do. Is this important to get this in the right hands? It won’t be an immediate project, there are others ahead of it. C67D9587-603D-45BA-9B15-0970B7A69AA7.jpeg

  4. Have some spare body parts, could make some sort of speedster or jalopy or winter snow machine or move it on to restorer if there are any left. 7059FECE-72D4-4FF9-887E-AE3E97C768D4.jpeg

What are you wanting to build?

Got to have a plan to continue, a stock model A ? Or doodle bug ? Then just clean the frame up, check for cracks etc. And repair as needed.

Hot rod ? V8 powered ? Then do the above plus box the frame, add a heavy trans crossmember etc.

Must have a plan before you continue because your building the foundation now. If the foundation isn't built to fit the planned outcome your in for trouble later.

Can't build a foundation for a small garage then decide to build a 2 story house on top of it and expect it to last.

step 1, pitch the A frame and buy some 32 rails

  9. So is this for sale? What is the question?

  10. I guess it is the least clear part of my model A collection of stuff. I want to know if the early model A frame and red wheel stuff is sacred to restorers and needs to be offered to them, or if I should make a plan to build something else.

Build something with it! Put a speedster body together and run it...

Yeah I know, easy for me to say!

  12. TITLE for the frame? Any body, not anybody, can be swapped. You got that?=#'s matching title to frame#'s????

  13. Yup, title for the 28 rpu which is currently on a 30 frame, because it has more practical wheels and steering box etc.

  14. Mmm, okay. I just feel like I started reading the book half way through the third chapter.

  15. There are a lot more subtle differences on an early (AR) frame/running gear than just the red steering wheel. Do some more research to determine what it is and go from there. If it truly is an AR, it's probably best suited to a restoration.
    Good luck!

Keep your eyes and ears open.
When you learn of a body, somewhere, that needs attention, theres your answer.
Or in the meantime, if somebody surfaces with need of a frame
( chassis ) and your pal doesn't mind,,,,,, let us know.
Either way you win doing what's right.
If the answer does not come and you have completed present projects,
Go find a closed-car cowl/windshield and plans to make a Woody
You won'r be bored, for sure.

Model A restorers are becoming fewer and farther between. If there is no title, the chassis is probably worth more in parts. I don’t see a left hand parking brake. I don’t see a powerhouse generator. Does it have an early front crossmember?

  18. Forgive my ignorance, how can I tell if it has an early front crossmember, and is that better? Will get a picture.

The frame serial number should be stamped on the upper driver's side frame rail, in the vicinity of where the firewall would be located. Serial numbers were sequential, and hence will tell you the date of manufacture.

I'm no expert, but I doubt you've struck "AR gold." I think you've scored a nice bunch of useful parts, and should have no compunction about using them.

Front crossmember of an early frame has tabs pointing up to direct mount the front of the engine. No separate mount.

I don’t see the round back spindles that the early cars had either.

Red steering wheel was discontinued in February 1929, the red wheel pictured might be painted because it looks like a big chip exposing a black wheel. Push button emergency brake started in July of 1929. The new style generator started in July 1929. It also has the cast type steering box that was used between September of '28 until March of 1930. The only way you can tell the build date of this mix of parts is with the serial number.

  24. You California guys do realize, not every state was a title state or even issues titles for cars of that vintage.

New York State didn't have titles until 1973 and still does not issue titles for pre 1973 vehicles, in fact when you register a pre 1973 car that has a title from another state in NY the out of state title is surrendered, and you are just given a NYS registration.

Meaning any pre 1973 car is in New York State has is no title, and if it was sold new here it never had a title.

How’s the title work on the North shores of lake erie?

  26. That's the point I don't know about the automotive ownership laws or paperwork in other states, there for I don't comment other than to point out that not every state has or had titles, however when ever any ownership or paperwork question comes up, one or more people (usually from California) has to ask or tell the person about getting or how title, with no knowledge of the laws in the state the poster or car is in!

I get ya, but California guys, Nevada guys, Ohio guys base responses off their experience. So imo, unless the OP lives in the same law as NY, there’s no reason/no relevance.
My normal response to legal vehicle parts like this is to contact the Vehicle Department within the state they reside.

  28. Well......Serial #'s were on the blocks, as well as the frames...... A title can be had with any of those two......... I seriously doubt the two are matching anymore, so its registered by one or the other........
What I wanted to reply to the OP was= "you have a clean title for THE frame".......Like I had mentioned, ONCE you have a TITLE, you can jam any body you want on it.............
There were NO NUMBERS on a body.............
Yes, Cali here. The DMV rules, and we have to play by them............= you play, or your shit out of luck.......
Helps to know WTF your doing, and know the right people to be legit..........
I'm all legit here, legal, and done....... But - try to cheat, and well,............ good luck with that.
What becomes of this, not my worry/concern. Just asking...... My shit is solid!

  29. Sorry fellows, the north shore of Erie is in Canada. There is a process to get an ownership. The frame numbers are not obvious, but I haven’t made any effort yet. There are a few projects ahead of this one. This has been good info so far. These pictures are in response to some earlier posts. I wouldn’t think these are round back spindles, but I am willing to learn. C625DFE4-09AE-45CD-B20F-F7C0DB38F1A5.jpeg
