good morning .happy almost 4th .just starting a new journey ! new to me a100 p/u .mtr is toasted . so i just bought 2 slant 6s , and could use some help on a positive i.d. on mtrs and trans. i know nothing about slant 6s exept that their slanted . any sharing of info would be helpful
It looks like it’s a a833 four speed overdrive. Post a picture of the side of the transmission where the shift arms are. Taking a guess based on that it’s probably a 225 out of a pickup.
There are numbers all over those engines, start looking...casting numbers and date codes cast on the sides, and stamped numbers on the top of the block, above and forward of the fuel pump. Scrape until you find them, then post pictures The blue one is from late 60s-early 70s, guessing from the block casting number. The red one is closer to 1965
Agree, sure looks like the A833OD. Nice find if it is. Could well be from a van too, I have one of those. Oops, took a second look and that is not a van shifter. And it is in the forward location, so likely a PU as the cars had it further back. If original, probably a 225 as the 170 was dropped before the A833 was used I think. Pull the air cleaner as from the pic available, that sorta looks like a 2bbl carb. If so that's a rare model.
i was told the red mtr was originak to a 70 d100 . the trans. as well . i dont remember ever seeing a 70 d100 slant 6 w/4 spd . but i know nothing . the trans is alum. housing w/cast tail any idea what kind of value . as i cant use it in my a100 .although it would have been nice . but i can live with 3 on the tree . i think the a100 has a 198 in it now . or at least that is what i think it was born with .
I was referring to the blue engine/trans, the red engine is earlier so no doubt about what you were told for its origin. If it’s aluminum then definitely an overdrive, unfortunately not exactly worth big money…$2-300?
The red motor has the spark plug boots and tubes, that puts it into the early to mid 60's. I don't see any pictures of the blue motor, but it appears to be late 60's to mid 70's and a 225. Does the blue motor have point ignition or electronic?

so i have to think overdrive in a slant 6 p/u would be a real dog . but i bet it got great mpg ,empty on a flat , or down hill . from what i just reasd those trans came out in 75 ?
I thought I’ve seen an older dated thread, something like “all about slant 6’s” or similar, I did a search here, but came up empty.
im about ready to try a dirt start and see if the blue/green mtr. runs .does mopar require a relay or something on the starter . or just a positive cable and jumper to the other terminal ?
You may want to snoop over on Allpar Forums They are pretty well the go to for everything Mopar and have a ton of sub groups for specific Types of Mopars and specific types of of Mopar engines. I already told you what the casting numbers mean, still haven't seen the stamped numbers on the top front of the block...they will tell the rest of the story. The mopar starter works kind of like a Chevy starter, you connect the battery to the big terminal, then jump the small terminal to it with a screw driver, and the starter will run
The '64 A100 was only available with the 170 cu. in. In '65 the 225 was available. Mine is the '64 with 3speed stick. Like you say, not a power house.
im just wanting to make sure the mtrs are 225 c.i. .dont rally need to know much more..the stamped #s are not visible without removing the alt bracket . ibelieve, wasntready to start tearing injust yet .if the mtr starts , runs , has oil pressure , no smoke ,no knocks im running it. that is if it will fit thru the door !!!
The Leaning Tower of Power was available in the early 1980’s with the four speed O/D. I think it was part of a package called the Miser.

I think that trans can be used in your A100. At least it was used in later vans. In my earlier post I mentioned the shifter location. I have one from a van. The shifter was located on the front mount and used a different adapter plate that raised and tilted it forward. Should be workable in an A100.
If you get it in and decide you need a bit more power use a 170 head on it. The ports and valves are still the same, but the chambers are smaller and will bump up the compression. With a three angle valve job and alittle milling it might be enough to even tell.
well im fairly sure the current mtr and my 2 new ones are all 225 .thnx for the help finding the info.... trans is up for grabs if anyone has a need .
First, welcome to the club. Second, lots of good info already here. I will add that since you seem to want easy answers instead of looking at charts, the 225 is a tall deck motor, the 170 and 198 were short decks. This is obvious at the front of the engine where the bypass hose is difficult to swap on a 225 but you must pull the head or pump to change on the short decks. Shorty The A100 trans mount is on the top of the tailhousing, so only they will bolt-in swap. You can go with a B-series trans and mount, and do some unibody framerail reinforcement (for the bolt holes). Watch your angles, those driveshafts are short and don't take any 'close enough' stuff. This is a BAD example slantsix.org is the best I've found for basic to deep dive stuff on the engines. There is also vintage-vans.com for info, and there used to be a good old a100 forum that has since died. Never visited the facebork page. The blue one appears to have a BBD 2 bbl, that color was post roughly 69. Probably does not have the spark plug boots and tubes which are shown on the earlier Red one. No boots/tubes is mostly hyd cam, the early ones were solid lifter. If you are going to pull the motor, start soaking the back doghouse bolts now!
happy 4th all . still good to be american .even though theres room for some improvements . nuf said !!all the imput is very helpfull . no 2 barrels in the mix . guess ill have to go with a 426 , if i want any more power ! pun intended . i think ive got the mtrs I.D.d. squirrel came thru . .thnx . i thought the 198 and 225 both had the same tall deck . but , i dont get pd. to think . or for anything for the record !......i ran the blue mtr. on the ground yesterday . VERY HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS !! i couldnt find a oil guage . but no smoke , blowby , knocks , ticks , or over heating after about a hour run . and only used less than a gallon of gas ! part of the reason for starting on this , is memories of a 67 a100 van i had 45 yrs ago .i recall 20 mpg and cruising at 70 mph pretty smooth . oh ,thinki remember2nd gear wheel spin ,too . hope ive out grown that .blew the van up !
