    Checking in
    Swapping frames and engines
Bought this a year and a half ago and just digging into it.
The crossmembers are a little messed up from previous repairs and lots of extra holes, so who knows what this thing has seen in 90 years.

Can’t decide whether to keep fenders or not. Thinking no for “speed” purposes.
but I change my mind every couple weeks…

Just wondering, there is another thread running here where the subject of title/registration was discussed. Is the title of your car in PA currently registered to the frame or engine number? Do you have to reregister if the frame is changed?
Beautiful body, I'd go with the fenders.

It’s tough to say what anyone other than me should do when having issues like this.
For me, I have a matching numbers engine and frame.
I won’t have any worries on how I’m handling it.

Considering how the model A was stamped/titled, I’m not sure what the best answer is for any one else though.
Engines have for many years been re-stamped when replaced and with the “VIN” number under the body, most states don’t check that.
Best recommendation that I could make would be, do what your local state/province considers legal.
I don’t think stamping a replacement engine would make a difference unless someone is trying to misrepresent something or intentionally do something illegal. However, I’m not the one who has to deal with your authorities.

    Not much news from me.

I vaguely remember a discussion about modifying the block to suit other lifters. Is my cognitive impairment getting the best of me, or am I on the right train of thought?

  13. So took the Burtz powered Coupe to Pendine hoping for great things.
My son travelled down with me - seen here inspecting the timing traps as the tide recedes...

The drive down Wednesday was fine until nearing Carmarthen I had a bit of pinking. Hardly surprising as it was bloody hot weather and we'd been driving for 300 miles. Stopped for a while to grab some groceries and I then had a misfire under load for the final 20 miles to Pendine.

Checked the plugs. Absolutely white. Fitted a fatter power valve on Thursday and went to get some new plugs. Seemed fine with an uphill blast on the A40 to 72 on the way to Tenby.

Running on Saturday it revved out in first and second, went flat in top, and wouldn’t accelerate.
Sunday, I borrowed some smaller wheels to lower my gearing and set my fastest speed, unrecorded, from a short run up whilst we were setting up the traps. Seemed sorted. During the first run it was accelerating in top and then started misfiring badly at about half track slowing me down.

Fitted some bigger jets for the second run and… same thing. Even worse. Bonnet open at the top end to see what the problem was, I gave it a couple of blips and it locked up solid. Waited for it to cool down and it unseized, so I drove it back to the pits. Racing over. Guessing at fuel starvation, I put the old fuel pump and regulator back on in the rain Sunday night figuring I’d drive out to the first fuel stop and see how it went… seems it went home. Eventually.

All seemed fine but still impossibly lean and it completely died about 50 miles out. Swapped in the spare 97 to try and solve the fuelling. Still dead. Spark looked weak. Swapped in the Mallory and coil I'd previously been running before fitting an FSI. I figured it was probably the coil but I didn’t want to break the set.

It fired up and ran like shit.
Put the original carb back on and it ran fine.
Back on the road I kept to around 50-60 in convoy until I left my final travel companion around 15 miles from home.
Put my foot down on the last stretch and it pulled cleanly up to god knows what speed for a few miles. I had been using my phone as a speedo but it had died by this point. And it ran absolutely fine with no misfire.

Checked the plugs in the morning. Still way lean. Odd thing is it’s all the same ancillaries I’ve used the past four years. I'm gonna blame the fuel pump I was trialling which was fine on the road but maybe didn't supply enough for wide open throttle. It's been redesigned now.

So, I set a frankly pathetic record of 62.85 in the new class of L4F/C. The L is for late as the Burtz block is deemed a new engine not Vintage. Still, piss poor record set, seized, fixed, and driven home.

Loading my B engine with the CRAGAR head to take to Bert's on Thursday. Going to end up with a good A touring engine this fall.

Well at least you got home and got to race...

Interesting that you were chasing fuel and ignition issues.... Weak spark normally shows carbon fouling plugs also, weird for sure... Any idea on why it seized up?

  24. With the possibility of us moving to Texas in the next 1-2 years, I've been working on having less clutter. With selling and trading, I've switched things up and plan on building a single seater that's Model B powered. Other than shortening the torque tube, I think it should be relatively easy to adapt the banger onto the T frame.
