    Hello,

This photo shows the beginning of the Malibu Pier and the big curve that goes right around the famed Surfrider Beach, better known as Malibu Point… It is a relatively calm location all during the year, but, not during the summer. The summer southern hemisphere swells hit this point break with a vengeance and creates some of the best waves to arrive in So Cal.

We knew of the place from friends and made it a point (pun intended) to start early in Long Beach to drive up the coast through the South Bay Area beaches and into Santa Monica. Then as Santa Monica melds into the famed Malibu Colony area, the shore starts to pick up the Southern Swells and the wave search begins each time. We knew not to go their during the winter months as the swell is from the wrong direction.

But, at the first notice of an impending Southern Hemisphere storm or disturbance, all eyes for the next 5 days were pointed to Malibu Point. It is one of the premier surf spots on the coast. Even in the early 1960 era, if one got there after 8:00 am, it was crowded. 10-15 guys out trying to ride the pristine waves all the way to the shoreline and on big wave days, to the pier.

If this photo were in color, perhaps that sedan delivery parked in one of the premier parking spots, would be red or in real life, Salmon Pink… ha!

So, we always timed our road trips to leave early enough to arrive at the coastal parking curb right in front of the beach. The premier parking spot(s) allowed us to stay all day. It provided a great place to come out of the water for a nice lunch view spot and nap, then when rested, hit the afternoon “glass-off” waves that made it a complete day.

It was a long drive home, but with smiles on our faces and tired bodies, we were a happy group of young surfers… YRMV

Note: Already this Summer, the Southern Hemisphere swell has given surfers some great waves all over the South facing beaches. Malibu was no different. The spot just gives and gives in great quality...
