    Hello,

The photo above is/was mis-labeled. Hermosa Beach is in the South Bay portion of the Los Angeles coast line and is a nice beach city, but currently, not named Surf City. Along this approximately 4+ miles long coastline facing directly West, there are three city piers sticking out in the ocean. They all have surf, some better than others. Starting with Redondo Beach’s unusual pier and neighboring breakwater that has some of the West Coast’s largest waves during the Winter season.

Then just up the shoreline, one comes to the Hermosa Beach Pier. It has waves, but not as well known as a great pier surf area, but has waves. Then just up the sandy shoreline, is the last pier in the city of Manhattan Beach. It, too has waves and can get good, but is a sandy shoreline and is considered a “beach break.” The unusual thing was that for us adventurous teenage surfers, this was our winter surfing road trip area, starting in the Palos Verdes Peninsula and surfing at the best spots along this portion of So Cal.

It was a way to surf different spots in So Cal. Our all-around season surf spot, the Huntington Beach pier was able to take all swells. The location just had great waves and good/great surf sessions were always had when we stopped for an early morning wakeup. But, the South Bay Area was a traveling surfer’s area with a different feeling to riding waves. Also, it was during the winter season and closer to Long Beach to the South Bay. (Just up the coast on PCH from our Westside Long Beach house.) The South Bay beaches/piers heading West were 12 + miles vs. 18+ mile South to Huntington Beach Pier waves.

The road trips we took were memorable and the wave riding was different, but enjoyable. The area just had a different feeling than all of the surf spots in the Long Beach to Orange County to Oceanside piers/coves/and sandy beach breaking waves… YRMV

    Note:

The name “Surf City” has been hashed around for many years. In California, two areas were labeling themselves Surf City. One was Santa Cruz and the other place in So Cal called Huntington Beach. Huntington Beach labeled themselves Surf City in the early days. But, both city’s histories and locations took on the name of Surf City.

"Huntington Beach may have won the right to the name ‘Surf City, USA’ in the California courts…” This round… was the last straw…
