New old stock with original filters. The filters look like course steel wool. I will probably look for k&n filters later
I think the comparison the prior guy was talking about is currently available repops of those chrome bonnet air filters..sold everywhere and on Speedway..etc. The old stuff was great for airflow..thats my guess. They probably don't filter dust and dirt from the air going into the engine which might cause accelerated wear though. How many miles are we gonna drive these old cars anyway? I wouldn't sweat it..but if you spent alot of cash rebuilding a motor..a k&n element makes sense.
I used a flat blade screwdriver and opened up the louvers on my last set of the cheap louvered ones from the swap meet. They were just barely open. I've also cut three 1" holes in the back side of the plain ones so they could breathe.
Hey @nochop how about some details on your engine, trans and rear end. We saw the engine come out of the box but you haven't provided any details on it. From your early photos I gather that the car was originally built with an Olds and possibly all Olds running gear. Is that an Olds diff that you are still running? I assume that Ross Racing Engines built what was in the box. You were really getting serious getting them to do your engine and trans. So fill us in please.
Ford 9 inch rear replaced the original Olds rear that my dad welded the spider gears up. Tony built the motor and asked what cam, I replied that I wanted something reliable and was more interested in a nice exhaust note. Tony told me what it dyno-ed out at but I have to look it up. Trans is a gm 400 no mods other than the added adapter. Realistically this is going to be a simple build. Thanks Swifty
I’m using bulkhead fittings to penetrate the fire wall. Shown here are the oil and fuel pressure gauge fittings. I did valve the fuel gauge for safety. Next will be the vacuum gauge and I’ll tee off and run to the trans behind the fire wall. The oil pressure line is a mock up length which I will take to the hose shop for proper lines and crimping. All the little details…..stay tuned folks
Love that your pulling the regular generic sbc for a very cool old school olds. It's a little bit of extra effort like this that makes a car a standout.
Thanks for that @nochop. So is that the engine that was originally in the car or does Tony have a supply of core engines to pick from? Oh, and how many cubes is the engine?
He hasn’t been out for a while, between school, karate, chores, church and girls, his owners keep him busy
Tony supplied the core, (324,#10 heads)it wasn’t worth sending mine in. BTW the original engine got put into this injected rail.
One more bulkhead fitting installed, vacuum. The plan is to tee it off to the gauge and trans behind dash then down the cowl to trans. Showing how the oil gauge and fuel pressure mockup
Wow, you have my respect!...my default is to have my collection of rat tail and rotary files on standby!
I liked the original, but this is shaping up to be stellar. I hope the rocket emblem stays. Have you had this car for a long time? Now that school is out maybe that grandson has some time…
Now that’s a creative dolly idea. Might have to steal that one I’ve got some casters kicking around here some place
