    Hi All,

This is embarr***ing! I am dis***embling a Ford 429 that has been sitting outside for a couple of years. Have removed seven of the pistons and rods. The eight on was frozen in the block. I got the crankshaft to turn so I turned it so the piston was straight up. I removed the crankshaft so all that was left was the piston and rod. Turned the block over and since the piston would not come out through the top of the block I proceeded to drive the piston through the block toward where the crankshaft would have been. Now the problem, the piston will not clear and there is no way to get it lined up to go back into the cylinder. Any ideas on how to get the piston out?

    Thanks

Is the piston trash or are you going all new( best bet)Remove all the rings it should go up. Use a torch cut it up!

  3. You mean it's clear of the bore at bottom, but you can't get it out of the crankshaft gallery?

To bad your not closer to Miami Fla.,,,I have comeplet, 2 FE Ford big blocks 4 sale cheep $600 for the pair.{ both }not MEL but fit same Engine bay, If picked up here in Miami.

You'll likely need to kill the piston completly to get it out.

What's preventing it going back in? The rings popped out of the grooves? If so, you can probably break the two top rings, and carefully pry the oil ring rails, then the spacer, out. Seems to me that once the rings are off, it should go back up just fine.

And Dana, I don't know how FE blocks will help a 429, it's a different motor

  6. maybe he was thinking about a 428, iirc those are FE

If you are not saving the piston, "drill baby drill" until it falls apart.

  9. The last stuck one I did we melted the top of the piston out.
Remove the rings you can reach and see if it can be pushed back in. If not ….
I’d probably nibble that piston down with a blue wrench until it was small enough to fall out the bottom.

If you have a plasma torch it cuts aluminum real easy without danger of hurting other parts. If you can cut most of the skirt out the remainder might tip over enough to fall out. Get a can of anti spatter spay at the welding supply store and thoroughly spray all surrounding surfaces. Hot sparks will not stick and cause problems later. Clean well with a wire brush when done.

My flattie had stuck pistons. I drilled large holes in the top of the piston and caved it in on itself. Once I did that it released from the cylinder wall and was able to be removed. I had planned on boring it out anyway so that took care of any cylinder wall damage.

  14. Get the rings out (if that's the problem) and turn the block upside-down so the piston is vertical. Fill the bottom of the piston with dry ice and see if it will shrink enough for you to push it out.
    Good luck!

Any of the above mentioned methods will work just be careful with the BFH and not damage anything but the piston.

C4 is good but TOVEX is better.

is it just a ridge keeping it from coming out the top? then remove or break rings and go back up with it.
