Myself, I won't be sad when this "patina" trend fades away.

  4. Go to any paint store and buy a quart of penetrol, a alkyd base material designed to help with the flow of enamel paint, it's a bit sticky as it dries but will give you the same effect and it si a much cheaper product, you can wipe it on with a cloth.

BTW, if you have a metal flake or fiberglass boat, that faded out finish will look brand new after applying penetrol. HRP

Vice Grip Garage sells the same stuff under his branding, he shows using it in some of his videos. The product you linked is a clear coat intended for mechanical adhesion over patina surfaces, whereas a regular automotive clear coat reacts with the material under it for chemical adhesion.

It is very much not the same as penetrol. No, it's not the same urethane clear that Home Depot sells.

  6. Friend of mine has used it. He kinda liked it.
I’m going experiment with some of the oil based additives.
    Probably this
    https://www.owatrolusa.com/product/owatrol-oil/
linseed and Gibbs oil has been covered here a lot.
CLR and a scuff pad is a good way yo remove rust STAINING and very mild rust. Will often reveal you have more paint left than you thought.
I’m not a fan of clear coat over rust.

"regular automotive clear coat reacts with the material under it for chemical adhesion."...
Now that depends on what exactly you are referring to as "regular automotive clear coat" and also what type of paint you are applying it over. Todays auto paint isnt even the same as it used to be

I know what penetrol is. Never heard of using it as a clear coat type use

Yeah, I paraphrased. The point is it's formulated for adhesion to old finishes and patina, not new paint. It's formulated differently from typical automotive clearcoats, as stated by Derek from Vice Grip Garage.

It's not a gimmick...I used it on my '41 Merc over old paint and worn primer with a few spots touched up with a rattle can. It's clear mixed with hardener/activator and can be wiped on with sponge or rag (like I did) brushed or sprayed. Cures hard and fast, seals completely and looks same as it did a year ago when I applied it. It cures FAST in warm weather...I had to put it in my 70 degree shop 'cause at 90 outdoors it was way too fast. For about 125 bucks I sealed the old paint on the Merc and now it does not get light rust when it's wet or humid and the water beads off.
It's paint...not oil or some other coating that needs re-application. The "after" pic is the one by the tree. I used the matte finish.

Yours has lasted years . I wish I could find out what kind of "formulation" "paint" it actually is
The old 70s truck id like to seal is original paint and worn of on top areas but sides are still nice shiny original paint. I pretty sure its factory acrylic enamel , single stage, fine metal flake. Ive been just waxing it but wax doesnt old up and im losing more paint every year

The guy in the poppy's patina video that did most the talking, was wearing women socks

Here is a dude that used Poppy's Patina and it looks like crap. Granted this dude is a joke and cant even apply it properly, like a 4 year old child applied it. Good luck getting through this horrible video

Who in Hell would try to use wipe-on clear coat designed for weathered old paint ON NEW PAINT? Morons.

Why would you want your car / truck to look like you could care less about it ? Dumbest fad since the Easter Egg colors of the 90’s

It's almost as if some people build things they think is cool, and not to entertain the masses. Strange. :)

Patina, fake patina, fake Olds valve covers on a SBC, fake bug catcher scoops, fake lake pipes, sausage down your pants, all bull shit. Nothing traditional here, except maybe the sausage.

Maybe cause some cant afford to buy a $20,000 paint job.... or even want too :)

  24. Maybe. Just maybe idiots like me like crappy faded paint and rust. Even with the ability to perform that “20k” paint job.
I prefer the “neglected” “lazy” look.

Bingo. Plus, I drive on (GASP!) gravel roads lined with brush and close tree branches that sometimes might contact my car. In fact, I drive a Lot of miles that way and really enjoy getting away from all the in-town crap and driving on roads that were common when my '41 Merc was made. An expensive paint job would make me skip that driving and ruin my fun. Sure, I could paint it cheaply and get shit for that too....so I may as well leave it with worn paint and primer showing through, coated with wipe-on matte clear to stop rust. It works and I like it. I think maybe, just maybe, folks might have even done the same thing (without the clear) back when "tradition" was but a pup. :D;)

HRP has it right, I used rattle can to touch up our wagon then wiped it down w Penetrol and it gives what paint is left a nice clean more even finished look. Not a shiney clear coat, more like a fresh buff job. No need for all the overpriced products with cheesy names. Screenshot_20221121-081728_DuckDuckGo.jpg
PS: I get more folks telling me "dont ever paint that car, than I get compliments on my nice car with nice paint"...
There's something unique about a worn old paint job that tells a story to me. I dont see why that gets some guys so bent outta shape.

  28. Swapping trim, head and tail lights, bumpers, grills, suspension, engines and dashes from other cars = ok

swapping a set of valve covers = blasphemy

crap is about as confusing as the English language

    glad I don’t really care.
