I got a new tank for my Mercury project. The car didn’t have a tank installed when I bought it. I’m at a loss on how to mount it. I have straps and they seem to fit in some slots in the rear. In the front of the tank there are hooks. I don’t however see any holes or mounting hardware underneath. I thought I was supposed to bolt the tube across, but I don’t think that’s right. Any insight is very appreciated.
I believe the goofy bends on the straps go into the slots in the rear frame, and the J bolts hook over the hooks hanging down behind the rear end. This is just a guess from looking at the pictures.
I don't think he has any j-bolts? I think those are the missing pieces, and the tube is there to keep the front ends of the straps from spreading apart once everything is in place. These are for a later Ford, but something similar:
Looking at my ‘56-‘59 Mercury Chassis Parts book, I’m pretty sure you don’t have the correct straps for ‘55-‘56 Mercury Hardtops/Sedans. The straps should fit onto the the hooks near the rear axle. The straps will have a vertical slot. On the rear, the straps are fastened onto threaded studs. If you don’t have studs present, there should be two female treaded holes. And, there is no cross bar between the two straps. Have you test fit the tank? If I remember correctly, there should be some locating “bumps” in the trunk floor that the tank fits onto. Hope this helps! You said you have a new tank - as in new production? I don’t know of new tanks for ‘55-‘56 Mercurys. But, I would love to have a new one for my ‘55 Mercury!
Here are some pics I just took of my 56 Mercury tank, don’t know if they help or not First two are the rear of the tank, last two are towards the front of the car
