Yes... it is the wrong oilpan. The sump look's too long.:( Or... the mount's are in the wrong place. Did you use the factory mount's to locate the engine or did you just wing it? Is that a Vette oilpan? "Cause they won't fit too good. The 3-step pan's fit the best.

  2. Well poo.
I’ll guess I’ll either modify this one or locate the correct one

this should be a 64ish engine.

at least the mounts will work.
I’m not used to this kit business.

Water pump and fan to rad clearance checked???

  4. Not yet.
I’ll put the clip on soon.
I might try a long water pump with the rad in the 6 position.
Ive got to do a PS pump and the wife wants AC

  5. Didn’t have the original.
    Just the stands.
The pan has the drain in the front of the sump.
    Don’t think it’s a vette.

  6. Happy wife. Happy life.;)

If it has any trace of orange paint it is a crovette engine and will have over 500 HP.:p

Putting the radiator in the 6 cyl. position does crowd the condenser with the hood latch. Just an FYI

What radiator we’re you running? And was it a 55 vs a 56?

The tightest one was with a crossflow, but the six cylinder one was almost as tight.

  10. Tossed some heads and an intake on it to get measurements.
Looks ok ish. Seems low at the front but this is my first stock tri 5 chassis to mess with.

This generic 70s era pump hits the frame. Set what I had of the original mount in for a reference for you experienced guys.
    IMG_3017.jpeg IMG_3016.jpeg
    Firewall clearance looks good. IMG_3015.jpeg
covers and tri power intake just for fit up. She don’t get those.
I got the ok to slick the firewall up though. :)

  11. Frame is level, intake at zero both directions.
I should have room to raise up the trans 3/8-1/2 if needed.

Everything look's good from where I'm sitting. The oil pan has me puzzled, though. o_O

When I side mounted my engine (avatar 56) I built mounts while engine was still in place with stock mounts. I didn’t concern myself with fuel pump. But when I went from electric pump to mechanical I was in for clearance issues. Move years ahead when I swapped my girlfriends 56 to a V8 I used the biscuit type side mounts. It put engine a little higher.

There are short and long (horizontally) sump pans.

  15. This is a 56/57 pan. It’s sump is deeper and shorter than the 58 up
According to the tri 5 forum guys IMG_2984.jpeg

    I grew up building Fords.
The more I mess with Chevys the more I learn the “all SBCs are basically the same” saying is crap.
They do fit most cars easier though. Especially the ones that had flatheads.

I just went out and looked at my 56 chevy , It has its orig 265 and mech fuel pump. the fittings do not come out of the bottom of the pump. they come out the side like this fuel pump.jpg

^^^^^ If you go that route do not buy a new replacement. Been on the flat bed twice with red 56 and the 57. Find an original and rebuild it.

  20. Was wondering that.
    Thanks.
The original fuel line is still there. Didn’t seem to go with the newer style pump.

  21. Found a pan. From what I read the 57/57 pan used a longer oil pump. No big deal. Gotta buy one anyway.
Might just grab a piece of exhaust tubing and add a dip to clear the center link.
Won’t be the first pan I modified.

For store bought stuff the mounts did good. I’d give em an A on the mounts. The trans dapt came with all grade 8 hardware. Around $80 from summit.
The bargain sale trans x-member from speedway worked. Didn’t have all its hardware. But it’s an open box deal for $54. I spaced up the trans 3/4 to get the carb mount at zero degrees. That’s ok. I’d rather shim up than need to modify to move down. I usually build mine with a spacer under the mount anyway.
Looks like the rams horns will be close to the new steering box.
It wouldn’t take much to modify the engine mount to slide over a bit.
    We will see.

You have to remember, 55 sbc is not like a 56 sbc and the 57 sbc changed once again in the oiling department.

Thanks for the review. I still need to mount the 283 in my sons AD pickup and have been hesitant to buy a kit. Good to know they all aren’t terrible.

2437033C-21CE-441D-8516-E375AFE0E440.jpeg The rear portion is not clipped at an angle to clear oil filter because there wasn’t one at the block in 55.

  26. The new PS box and OE rams horn manifold.
Engine is centered in the chassis.
I can scoot it over if a need a little more room.
    IMG_3032.jpeg

  27. One bolt in each mount. No hoist, no jacks Level both direction on the intake. IMG_3033.jpeg
Trans centered on the new x-member.
Got a fat fingers worth of distributor room.
    Around 3/4. Normal?

Place cap and twist. If it clears the screw taps your good.

This tri power intake doesn’t like it much
