Torque them to 30, 40 is getting up there for a 3/8ths bolt

 

I agree, 30-35 ft lbs max.

 

About the same as clutch cover bolts. Ace Hardware has a great hardware selection.

 

Get grade 8 instead of grade 5. Overkill, but at least you won’t be twisting them off.

 

there isnt an ace hardware near me, but there is a local one for the farmers nearby.

also, i used blue loctite on the clutch cover bolts and just snugged them

 

someone had JUST come through and bought out their 1 1/4 long grade 8 bolts. grade 5 it is!

 

5 lock washers, 5 new bolts, locktited and torqued to 30 foot pounds. then lubed. my axle has no leaks!

 

No leaks…….yet. Drive it and get the seal warm, then you’ll know for sure.

 

before it poured out as fast as you put it in. this is a major upgrade!

 

i noticed its kind of hard to turn when its actually full of fluid. shows just how little fluid was in it before.

 

installed the seal with a big piece of PVC pipe, went to fill the transmission with oil specifically meant for transmissions with yellow metal in them. and noticed how tight it would be to fill from below. so i popped that plastic bit out and tadaa! a hole to fill my transmission from easily with a funnel. i wish modern cars had access panels like these, would make maintenance so much easier.

 

drivelines back together and tested, no leaks. however, these wheels need balanced something awful. thats what i get for DIYing the tires on the rims.

i changed the oil pump O ring thanks to @egads. and am changing the oil for the second time. oils black and junky.

 

I found out the company that made that drain plug was in buisness from 1965-1985. cant find anything else about it sadly.

 

its finally down off the stands, other than needing a starter solenoid shes roadworthy... for the most part.

 

the day will soon come when i drive it to the dmv. (yes ive decided, im driving it, with a truck behind me with spare parts if anything happens.)

ive gotten a quote with Hagerty and am putting it on insurance.
only 222 dollars a year! what an offer.

 

Hagerty billed me $505 this year, I have an agreed on value of $27k on it plus road service (you get a cool magazine quarterly with that ). I believe I started out in 2016 at $376 a year.

On solenoids, get a spare too. My "quality" one from Napa took a dump on me in about a year.

 

i bought a used one off an edsel and im getting one off an old ford truck in a junkyard. new ones have been junk in my experience

also, my agreed value is 9700. because thats the cheapest ive seen it will be to find another one near me.

 

Aaaand its denied. need to have my own insurance on another car before they'll write a policy. they also said i have outstanding/unpaid tickets, which is very strange as i have nothing of the sort.

 

At the rate you are going you will have the car on the road nothing flat. Me...I just fired her up for the first time and am moving onto the floor pans for the rest of the year. Maybe next year I can get her on the road-maybe.

I was going to mention most classic agreed value insurance they require you to have a insured daily driver so it's not driven every day. Put liability on it and drive it, later on you can pick up a cheap driver and get the collector insurance on the 57.

 

I don’t have collectors insurance on anything, they don’t like that I use them as vehicles…

 

oh i do have a cheap driver. beat around in an old ex cop crown vic. its just not insured in my name as it would be around 200 bucks a month.

edit: my bad, 300 a month. so i pay my dad 75 which is what it costs for him to insure my cars.

yaaaay i love mandatory rackets...

 

We used to buy pickups and panel trucks since the insurance was real low. I flew under the radar but my brother got gigged for not having another car by the insurance. He found a loop hole, it may have been having our dad list him on the family policy.

I got a wiper motor that works and isn't broken internally. it works pretty good, however the wiper arms are aftermarket and stick at the curve of the glass.

I'd like to find some NOS arms. I had to "richard" around with mine so they did a half-fast job at contacting the glass.

 

now the voltage regulator is acting up again. im going to look and see if theres any easy way to repair them

 

How about doing an alternator conversion? After my charging system issues on my '64 Fords, I was about done with generators.

 

the generator is perfectly fine, puts out 13.1 volts at idle if the voltage regulator is actually working.
