Customs Finally starting on the wife’s 56

    As I mentioned, I scanned thru the thread and I saw the mention of choosing between different engines. The specifices on the correct exhaust and distributor choices as well as the fuel pump did cause me to "assume" incorrectly that Anthony was considering somewhat of an original look for the engine compartment..........but thats "ON ME" for not following the thread closely enough. I'm glad there are people out there who are into the detail stuff and can step up and provide that technical info when needed. I'm kinda at the opposite end of that spectrum and more into performance than correctness. So my apologies for misconstruing why information was presented.:)

  4. We are planning a some what stock looking engine compartment. Her version of it. She likes the script covers and stock looking air cleaners. Details like correct manifolds, accessory holes in the heads …. she don’t care.
    But (I’m typing this next comment in confidence) wondered about my latest engine acquisition. A 5.7 LS. Told her it’s her car. I’ll use whatever engines she likes.
    So as long as I can get her PS, PB and air she’s good with the SBC.
    So that’s where we’re headed.


    Until she changes her mind anyway.

    but during these past several posts we’ve learned that there are quite a few differences in the first few years of the SBC.
    We just need the parts we use to work.

    I think that looks nice. I never would have known, much less noticed it was for a 2 barrel. IF I noticed anything it would have been the oil filter and maybe valve cover bolts..........but most likely I would have just thought they did a nice job making it look close to original and wondered what was really hiding inside.

    I respect when it’s done well. There are a few bolt on’s I don’t care for. But it’s done with thought. Like color chooses so things don’t jump out at you. A little black on the distributor housing would have been nice.

    billet dist is electronic and the so called carb is EFI..... I can see a modern coolant temp sensor on the far side of the intake....

    been at a work conference. Toured a ship building fab shop. They use the same stuff we do to make sheet metal parts. They just have way bigger fab tools.
     
  14. Been out of town. Work sent me to Mobile Al for “professional development”.
    Toured the Port Authority, a Navy ship builder and drove to NO to visit the National WW2 museum yesterday. Amazing place.
    Got home and had a prize waiting.
    Definitely has more clearance.

  15. We were there back in June and the displays there were just so amazing. Especially the planes they had with all of their armament and size. The vehicles were also very great representations of what was accomplished by the men who operated them.

  17. I'm hoping we can revisit the fuel pump info for a moment... Stumbling on to this information resolved a mystery I wasn't even aware I had with the Edelbrock pump on my '56 (currently blown apart). I did some light research on fuel pumps on SummitRacing last night and even found review information that said fitment was tight on tri-five chevs for a couple pumps. I know some of the available new fuel pump choices have clockable lower housings to maybe give choices to inlet/outlet placement... but I'm wondering what other tri-five owners are generally doing to address the tight fit scenarios. Are a number of you defaulting to a certain brand & part number for a mechanical fuel pump because it eases/lessens some of the fitment issues? Are there new/modern mechanical pumps available that have the same/similiar design dimensions of the original tri-five pumps?

  19. thank you for that reference. I wasn't aware of that pump, but some brief searching I did doesn't show it available nor a price. Since it's labelled a 'corvette' part is it affordable? (if you know)
     
  20. NOS ones are pricey.
    Summit lists one. Has a bad review. But sounds like the guy ordered the wrong pump.

    that part number came from one of the tri 5 Chevy forums.

  21. Steering column cut.
    Before cutting, I measured the distance from the dash to the end of the column. And measured the amount of shaft that stuck out past the column for the steering wheel. You will use these measurements later. It was determined from measuring from the center of the steering box to the end of the rag joint that 3-3 1/4 needed removed from the column. This was determined from comparing the same measurement on the old box with the column attached.

    the column was measured and reference lines made to clock the tube correctly. Then squared up in a chop saw and cut

    Clamped and squared the pieces in the chop saw, aligned reference marks and tack welded.
    Then used a 3/4 dowel to figure out the shaft cut

    Installed the rag joint (install the bolt. It affects how it fits) fit the dowel and column. Used reference measurements to place the column back to its original length/placement with the dash.

    Used the measurements from the original set up to cut the dowel to length

    removed the dowel, used it to cut the original shaft to length. Then placed the shaft in a vice and “milled” the double D

    reinstalled the shaft, column and steering wheel. Looks good so far

    the next trick will be modifying the column shifter.

    Short pump PS bracket. Mid 60s.
    Hits the frame.
    I’d like to use the 63 alternator bracket that uses the rams horn manifolds.

    you may have to customize the PS brackets. 56 chevs that had PS had pumps mounted to the back of the generator.
    do ya need ps? I heard somewhere earlier today, good ball joints and skinny bias ply tires LOL

    A left side custom front mount used to be avaliable for the saginaw style pump, It doubled as a motor mount. I don't know if it's still avaliable. Try checking the Tri-Five vendor's.
